WEED, Calif. \u2014 The City of Weed announced that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) safely captured a mountain lion Saturday night that had been feeding on pets and feral cats in the area.<\/p>\n
The City said the capture was around 8:35 p.m. after several weeks of coordinated monitoring efforts involving CDFW and the Weed Police Department.<\/p>\n
Over the past several weeks, CDFW and Weed Police had been monitoring possible mountain lion activity around the southern edge of the city.<\/p>\n
Trail cameras placed along the railroad line and Boles Creek had captured various wildlife, including coyotes, bobcats, foxes, and raccoons, but no confirmed images of a mountain lion until recently.<\/p>\n
The city also said additional cameras were placed near Boles Creek and at the local elementary school to help identify movement patterns and determine whether a lion was active in the area.<\/p>\n
Officials urged residents to continue taking precautions to protect pets, such as bringing them indoors at night and securing food and trash that could attract wildlife.<\/p>\n
The city also encouraged the public to report any future sightings through CDFW\u2019s online wildlife incident reporting system here<\/a> or by contacting the CDFW Northern Region office at (530) 225-2300.<\/p>\n The City of Weed said it will continue working with CDFW to monitor the area and provide updates as needed.<\/p>\n
