It may drive some to actually leave.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/87066796007-nyc-mayoral-race.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>NYC mayoral hopefuls rally voters ahead of election day<\/p>\n<p>Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa make their final efforts to connect with voters ahead of NYC election day.<\/p>\n<p>Every time I pull into New York City, I blast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2025\/04\/04\/taylor-swift-tour-new-york\/82405928007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Taylor Swift&#8217;s &#8220;Welcome to New York.&#8221;<\/a> Prosaic, perhaps, but the thumping bass and lyrics painting New York as a city of bright lights and possibilities seem appropriate, inspiring and true.<\/p>\n<p>In New York City, as the song goes, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Taylor-swift-welcome-to-new-york-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the lights are so bright but they never blind me<\/a>.&#8221; But after the Nov. 4 New York mayoral election, Zohran Mamdani&#8217;s policies may open the eyes of Gen Z so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/young-americans-socialism-too-much-thats-problem-libertarians-must-fix#:~:text=A%20recent%20survey%20by%20the,29%2C%2062%20percent%20said%20favorable.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">blindingly enthralled<\/a> with democratic socialism, they seem poised to give the Democratic nominee the reins of one of the most dazzling cities in America. It would be a devastating loss for common sense and New York City.<\/p>\n<p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BOENYC\/status\/1985127403690041390?t=aAXzJGeCqKWqgqLR9TnCPg&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">than 735,000 New Yorkers<\/a>\u00a0cast ballots during the early-voting period, and 16% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/gen-z-support-zohran-mamdani-early-voting-new-york-city-mayor-10980959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">were Generation Z voters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mamdani&#8217;s socialist policies and extreme views on the New York Police Department and the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ujafedny.org\/news\/uja-federation-of-new-yorks-2023-jewish-community-study-of-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">robust Jewish population<\/a> will destroy \u2212 or at least dim the lights of \u2212 the city they call home. It might drive some to actually leave.<\/p>\n<p>Some New Yorkers say they&#8217;ll leave if Zohran Mamdani wins<\/p>\n<p>We are seeing hints of this already. <a href=\"https:\/\/jlpartners.com\/new-york-2025-polling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">A\u00a0survey done by J.L. Partners<\/a>\u00a0for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-15235135\/Mamdani-New-York-exodus-mayoral-race.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the Daily Mail<\/a> found that, despite Mamdani&#8217;s incredible popularity with the youth vote, not everyone is excited that the state legislator will institute his socialist agenda on New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p>The poll found that 9%, approximately 765,000 New Yorkers, would &#8220;definitely&#8221; leave the city <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/663253f0bc87b7070102f41f\/t\/690929c28656e659f5cf819e\/1762208194114\/DailyMail_NYCMayoral_Oct25_Deck.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">if Mamdani was elected<\/a>. And 25%, or nearly 2.13 million people, would &#8220;consider&#8221; leaving. New York City <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/news\/nation-world\/zohran-mamdani-nyc-mayor-candidate-almost-a-million-people-will-flee-new-york-city-poll-kathy-hochul-andrew-cuomo-barack-obama-curtis-sliwa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">has a population of 8.5 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Opinion: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2025\/10\/17\/zohran-mamdani-new-york-mayor-socialism\/86714872007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York should elect Zohran Mamdani mayor. Then we&#8217;ll see socialism fail.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it remains to be seen whether Mamdani is elected and whether residents will actually leave in droves. But even the fact that so many have expressed a desire to leave shows some people are anxious about Mamdani&#8217;s candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, residents do leave a state because of a poor leader. There&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/economy\/housing\/texas-housing-california-migration-affordability-a50c78f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">been an exodus in California<\/a> since Gavin Newsom became governor <a href=\"https:\/\/governors.library.ca.gov\/40-newsom.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in 2019<\/a>. He&#8217;s not quite a socialist but a progressive Democrat now rebranding himself for a possible presidential run.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani&#8217;s views would be harmful to New York<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani&#8217;s socialist policies are going to be a problem, but I&#8217;m also concerned about his worldview on crime and antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s waffled on how to handle crime, sometimes saying he would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/flashback-zohran-mamdani-pledged-disband-key-police-unit-handles-mass-shootings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">disband<\/a> the NYPD&#8217;s Strategic Response Group. He&#8217;s also smeared the NYPD, calling them &#8220;racist&#8221; and a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.police1.com\/nyc-mayoral-candidate-apologizes-for-2020-comments-calling-nypd-racist-a-rogue-agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">rogue agency<\/a>,&#8221; then backtracked with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eI5URipB_xM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">apology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, Mamdani has even coupled his anti-police stance with antisemitism (how inclusive!).<\/p>\n<p>He recently had to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/30\/politics\/zohran-mamdani-nypd-idf-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">give CNN&#8217;s Anderson Cooper an explanation<\/a> of a comment that had resurfaced on social media. The man who wants to be mayor of New York tried to walk back his comment and redirect to his focus on safety, but the damage is done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to make clear that when the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it\u2019s been laced by the IDF,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ULxKibz41Aw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mamdani said in a clip from a Democratic Socialists of America convention<\/a> held in 2023. The IDF is a reference to the Israel Defense Forces.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 31, Mamdani told Cooper that the comment was a reference to training exercises between the NYPD and the IDF, but his explanation beyond that made little sense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Opinion: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2025\/11\/02\/mamdani-education-plan-schools-nyc-mayor-election\/86839441007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mamdani\u2019s plan to kill gifted education won&#8217;t fix inequality. It will deepen it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gen Z&#8217;s embrace of Mamdani was inevitable<\/p>\n<p>It might seem contradictory that Mamdani is wildly popular with Gen Z while promoting extreme views that could drive people out of New York City. But it\u2019s not a contradiction at all. Younger voters have increasingly gravitated toward progressive agendas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:.5em;border:2px solid #4f4bb6;margin:0 auto\"><b>Opinion newsletter:<\/b> Sign up for our newsletter on conservative values, family and religion from columnist Nicole Russell. <a href=\"https:\/\/profile.usatoday.com\/newsletters\/the-right-track\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Get it delivered to your inbox<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/young-americans-socialism-too-much-thats-problem-libertarians-must-fix#:~:text=A%20recent%20survey%20by%20the,29%2C%2062%20percent%20said%20favorable.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cato\/YouGov survey<\/a> found that 62% of Americans ages 18-29 had a &#8220;favorable view&#8221; of socialism. As socialism has grown in popularity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/curiosity\/axios-capitalism-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">views on capitalism<\/a> have declined. The appeal of socialism has slowly increased among younger generations over the years.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/victimsofcommunism.org\/annual-poll\/2020-annual-poll\/#:~:text=This%20year&#039;s%20study%20showed%20increased,of%20a%20more%20socialist%20system.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">2020 Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation poll<\/a> found that, from 2019 to 2020, Gen Z increasingly favored socialism by 9 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>If residents, especially wealthier, innovative, business-owning New Yorkers, flee because they don&#8217;t want to see their taxes raised and an increase in crime and antisemitism, New York City will start to falter.<\/p>\n<p>Most New Yorkers <a href=\"https:\/\/sri.siena.edu\/2023\/04\/12\/70-happy-they-live-in-ny-30-wish-they-lived-somewhere-else\/#:~:text=New%20York%20when%20they%20retire.%E2%80%9D%20%E2%80%9CMost%20say,Yorkers%2C%20the%20quality%20of%20both%20education%20and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">love the city<\/a> so much they wouldn&#8217;t change anything. Well, now, one man seems on the verge of being elected to change everything.
