{"id":354719,"date":"2025-11-04T09:58:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T09:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/354719\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T09:58:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T09:58:15","slug":"young-immune-cells-partly-reverse-alzheimers-symptoms-in-mice-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/354719\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Young&#8217; Immune Cells Partly Reverse Alzheimer&#8217;s Symptoms in Mice : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Specially engineered &#8216;young&#8217; immune cells could help to reverse the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/study-reveals-critical-age-when-your-thinking-begins-to-decline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effects of aging<\/a> and the damage to brain cells caused by diseases such as  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"179027\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>, according to a new study in mice.<\/p>\n<p>In their natural state, these immune cells are known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mononuclear_phagocyte_system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mononuclear phagocytes<\/a>, and they flow around the body, cleaning up waste.<\/p>\n<p>As we get older, however, these immune-cell cleaners <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.imlet.2020.12.003\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">get a bit sloppy<\/a>, clearing away less cellular debris and triggering more inflammation than before. Inflammation and protein aggregation are features of many age-related diseases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-signal-hidden-in-the-brain-may-reveal-alzheimers-years-in-advance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the US produced replacement squads of mononuclear phagocytes, using <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Induced_pluripotent_stem_cell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">human induced pluripotent stem cells<\/a> \u2013 starter cells that can be reprogrammed into many different cell types.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alzheimers-and-cancer-may-soon-be-treated-with-sounds-we-cant-hear\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer&#8217;s And Cancer May Soon Be Treated With Sounds We Can&#8217;t Hear<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Previous studies have shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mice-hippocampus-enzyme-discovery-anti-aging-therapy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transfusions of blood<\/a> or plasma from young mice improved cognitive decline in older mice, but that is difficult to translate into a therapy,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/newsroom\/young-immune-cells-could-treat-alzheimers-aging-symptoms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> biomedical scientist Clive Svendsen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our approach was to use young immune cells that we can manufacture in the lab \u2013 and we found that they have beneficial effects in both aging mice and mouse models of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/LearningTask.jpg\" alt=\"Immune cells graph\" width=\"642\" height=\"651\" class=\"wp-image-179030 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Older mice injected with &#8216;young&#8217; immune cells (Aging iMP) performed as well as younger animals (injected with saline as a control) on novel object location tasks. (Moser et al., Adv. Sci., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>The treated mice did better on memory tests, the researchers found, while they also developed healthier microglia in their brains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microglia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microglia<\/a> are the central nervous system&#8217;s mononuclear phagocytes. They help reduce damage and waste in the brain, but <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-024-54779-w\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">become depleted<\/a> in older brains and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/brain-autopsies-revealed-a-potential-culprit-behind-alzheimers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">those of people with Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another observed benefit was an increase in the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mossy_fiber_(hippocampus)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mossy cells<\/a> that help the brain&#8217;s memory control center, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hippocampus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hippocampus<\/a>, function properly. Like microglia, these mossy cells can be hit by old age and Alzheimer&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The numbers of mossy cells decline with aging and Alzheimer&#8217;s disease,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/newsroom\/young-immune-cells-could-treat-alzheimers-aging-symptoms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> neuroscientist and lead author Alexandra Moser.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did not see that decline in mice receiving young mononuclear phagocytes, and we believe this may be responsible for some of the memory improvements that we observed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers originally hypothesized that mononuclear phagocytes could be part of the reason that blood plasma and bone marrow transfusions have <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/nm.3569\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the rejuvenating effects<\/a> they do, and that idea was supported by the results here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/spark-into-space-comp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Mid-Article-Promo-Astro-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Win a $10,000 Space Coast Adventure Holiday\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177074 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the engineered immune cells that Moser and colleagues injected into mice didn&#8217;t appear to reach the animals&#8217; brains, so the researchers figured the observed effects must be down to something produced by fitter, stronger mononuclear phagocytes circulating in the body.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;young&#8217; cells may have released anti-aging proteins or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extracellular_vesicle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tiny parcels involved in cell-cell communication<\/a>, called extracellular vesicles, that made their way to the brain, reducing inflammation and boosting the immune system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-alzheimers-treatment-clears-plaques-from-brains-of-mice-within-hours\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Alzheimer&#8217;s Treatment Clears Plaques From Brains of Mice Within Hours<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note that most of the benefits observed here were in the older mice, not the mice engineered to display signs of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. There was also plenty of Alzheimer&#8217;s-related brain damage, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-alzheimers-treatment-clears-plaques-from-brains-of-mice-within-hours\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">amyloid-beta protein<\/a> buildup, that wasn&#8217;t repaired.<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/human-brains-develop-in-unique-ways-that-explain-some-mysteries-left-by-mice-models\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no guarantee we&#8217;ll see the same effects<\/a> in human brains either.<\/p>\n<p>Despite those limitations, the early signs of this approach are promising.
