RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Nineteen Triangle restaurants received Michelin recognition and business is expected to pick up at the locations in the coming days.<\/p>\n

The state tourism department, Visit North Carolina, says studies have shown places could see a double-digit sales increase as soon as they receive Michelin recognition.<\/p>\n

Dozens of people packed into Prime Barbecue when the beloved Knightdale BBQ joint earned the guide’s nod of approval.<\/p>\n

“This is absolutely insane. We are so thankful,” said Prime Barbecue Manager Marcus Shealy.<\/p>\n

For the first time, the American South is being included in the prestigious guide.<\/p>\n

“I never thought it was possible that Michelin would even come to the Southeast,” said Raleigh restaurateur Chef Scott Crawford. “I sort of gave up the dream for Michelin stars by staying in the South.”<\/p>\n

When Crawford started cooking in the region more than 25 years ago, he says he focused on building up the Capital City’s culinary scene.<\/p>\n

Now, three of his places are listed as Recommended Michelin<\/a> restaurants: Crawford and Son, Jolie and Brodeto.<\/p>\n

“It’s the most meaningful recognition that I’ve received in my career,” said Crawford. “We’re incredibly humbled and it is a surreal moment in time for me.”<\/p>\n

“This is a major award for the Triangle food scene,” said Brewery Bhavana Chef Chun Shi.<\/p>\n

Shi was once a computer programmer, working and living in China. In her 40s, she decided to give up a lucrative career to follow her passion for cooking in America.<\/p>\n

She brought the flavors of her homeland to the kitchen of Brewery Bhavana.<\/p>\n

The restaurant was also recognized by Michelin.<\/p>\n

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think that Michelin would take an interest,” said Shi. “I’m so thrilled. It’s such an honor.”<\/p>\n

Tamasha Indian Restaurant<\/a> is another spot that received the accolade.<\/p>\n

“We have more responsibility now. We have to raise the bar,” said Tamasha Co-Owner Mike Kathrani.<\/p>\n

The state tourism department, Visit North Carolina<\/a>, says all of these Michelin recognitions will strengthen the economy and make it a foodie destination.<\/p>\n

“It’s an amazing opportunity for the whole state of North Carolina,” said Visit North Carolina Spokesperson Scott Peacock. Michelin is a global bill opportunity. It’s a global platform. Travelers from all over the world look for and seek out Michelin-starred and Big Gourmand and Recommended restaurants to not only dine out when they’re in places, but also to plan trips around.”<\/p>\n
