\n\tSydney Sweeney<\/a> is finally speaking out on the American Eagles jeans campaign<\/a> that caused a national firestorm earlier this year. Speaking to GQ magazine<\/a> for a new cover story, the \u201cEuphoria\u201d Emmy nominee said she was never tempted to put together a formal statement explaining or defending the controversial ads during the height of backlash because \u201cI\u2019ve always believed that I\u2019m not here to tell people what to think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI know who I am. I know what I value. I know that I\u2019m a kind person,\u201d Sweeney said. \u201cI know that I love a lot, and I know that I\u2019m just excited to see what happens next. And so I don\u2019t really let other people define who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking directly about the campaign and the subsequent backlash, Sweeney said: \u201cI did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I\u2019m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life\u2026 I knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans, it didn\u2019t affect me one way or the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSweeney\u2019s American Eagle<\/a> campaign was centered on the tagline \u201cSydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,\u201d which created a pun around \u201cgreat genes\u201d and ignited\u00a0outrage online<\/a>\u00a0over the company allegedly glorifying the actor\u2019s white heritage and thin physique. Some users on social media\u00a0even compared<\/a>\u00a0the ads to \u201cNazi propaganda.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tA national controversy ensued, so much so that Trump\u2019s White House\u00a0weighed in<\/a> when communications manager Steven Cheung called the backlash a prime example of \u201ccancel culture run amok.\u201d Vice President JD Vance then\u00a0mocked liberals\u00a0<\/a>for creating a hysteria around campaign and quipped: \u201cMy political advice to the Democrats is continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi. That appears to be their actual strategy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tEven Donald Trump got asked about<\/a> the ads amid reports that Sweeney was also a registered Republican. The president responded: \u201cShe\u2019s a registered Republican? Oh, now I love her ad! You\u2019d be surprised at how many people are Republicans\u2026 If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSweeney told GQ magazine <\/a>that \u201cit was surreal\u201d to have Trump and Vance weighing in on the ads, but she did not pay attention to the controversy at large. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI kind of just put my phone away,\u201d the actor said. \u201cI was filming every day. I\u2019m filming\u00a0\u2018Euphoria,\u2019\u00a0so I\u2019m working 16-hour days and I don\u2019t really bring my phone on set, so I work and then I go home and I go to sleep. So I didn\u2019t really see a lot of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOne thing Sweeney did hear about was American Eagle\u2019s stock rising 38% amid the controversy, to which she said: \u201cI was aware of the numbers as it was going. So when I saw all the headlines of in-store visits were down a certain percentage, none of it was true. It was all made up, but nobody could say anything because [the company was] in their quiet period. So it was all just a lot of talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSweeney is currently promoting \u201cChristy,\u201d her well-reviewed biopic on boxer Christy Martin. To those who would potentially use Sweeney\u2019s politics or the jeans ad against her by choosing not watch her movies or TV projects, Sweeney shared this note: \u201cI think that if somebody is closed off because of something they read online to a powerful story like\u00a0\u2018Christy,\u2019\u00a0then I hope that something else can open their eyes to being open to art and being open to learning, and I\u2019m not going to be affected by that.\u201d<\/p>\n
