Election Day 2025 is here as voters across the country head to the polls. And while Tuesday\u2019s elections don\u2019t involve the presidency or control of Congress, there are plenty of intriguing statewide and local races and ballot measures<\/a> that could offer a window into the mood of the electorate heading into next year\u2019s midterms.<\/p>\n

In New York City, voters will decide who will serve as its next mayor in a contentious race that has drawn intense national interest and been billed as a fight over the future of the Democratic Party. Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state Assembly member and democratic socialist, defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in June\u2019s Democratic primary. Cuomo decided to remain in the race as an independent. Curtis Sliwa won the GOP nomination.<\/p>\n

Republicans have attacked Mamdani, and President Trump has suggested he would withhold federal funding from the nation\u2019s biggest city if it elects \u201ca communist mayor<\/a>.\u201d There are also other key mayoral races in major cities, including Seattle, Minneapolis and Detroit.<\/p>\n

Just two states are holding gubernatorial elections this year. In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former U.S. representative, is taking on Winsome Earle-Sears, the state\u2019s current Republican lieutenant governor, in the race to replace outgoing Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who is not eligible to run for another term. In New Jersey, Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill is up against former Republican state Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli in the race to replace Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, who is term-limited.<\/p>\n

And in California, voters will decide whether to authorize a proposal \u2014 called Proposition 50<\/a> \u2014 to redraw the state\u2019s congressional districts to give Democrats more House seats in Congress. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has championed the plan as a way to counter the recent GOP-led redistricting efforts in Texas and other red states.<\/p>\n
