{"id":356859,"date":"2025-11-05T06:53:39","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T06:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/356859\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T06:53:39","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T06:53:39","slug":"zohran-mamdani-wins-2025-nyc-mayoral-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/356859\/","title":{"rendered":"Zohran Mamdani wins 2025 NYC mayoral election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Yorkers elected their first socialist mayor Tuesday, handing <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/us-news\/who-is-zohran-mamdani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">far-left Democrat Zohran Mamdani<\/a> an historic victory \u2014 as he <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/04\/us-news\/nyc-mayoral-election-live-updates-results-reactions-from-races-across-the-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed a\u00a0mandate<\/a> for his potentially budget-busting progressive agenda and all but declared war on President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press and NY1 called the race for\u00a0the\u00a034-year-old Mamdani about 40 minutes after polls closed at 9 p.m., inspiring cheers from his supporters at his campaign\u2019s Brooklyn watch party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change, a mandate for a new kind of politics, a mandate for a city that we can afford and a mandate for a government that delivers exactly that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy friends, we have toppled a political dynasty,\u201d Mamdani said in\u00a0the 20-minute address. \u201cI wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in his private life but that [will be] the final time I utter his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Far-left Democrat Zohran Mamdani won New York City\u2019s mayoral race on Tuesday. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>He then\u00a0taunted Trump, prompting cheers from his fired-up crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Donald Trump, since I know you\u2019re watching I have four words for you: turn the volume up,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, carried 50.4% of votes to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/04\/us-news\/cuomo-frames-race-as-most-important-election-of-my-lifetime-as-he-makes-final-election-day-pitch-to-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independent candidate Andrew Cuomo<\/a>\u2019s 42% at 12 a.m., with nearly 98% of precincts reporting, the city Board of Elections said. GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa came in third with a rock-bottom 7.1%.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/05\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-flashes-beaming-smile-in-pic-with-uganda-bigwig-who-pushed-law-to-put-gay-people-in-jail-for-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uganda-born Mamdani<\/a> will be the Big Apple\u2019s first Muslim, first South Asian and first socialist mayor, as well as one of the youngest. The apparent mayor-elect marked his victory with a social media video showing subway doors opening and proclaiming, \u201cNext stop is City Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani led Cuomo by just 6 points in an AtlasIntel survey released Saturday. Ribeiro for New York Post<\/p>\n<p>The state assemblyman\u2019s rise from dark horse candidate laser-focused on affordability to ascendant mayor-elect came despite concerns over his youth and inexperience and his \u201ctax the rich\u201d platform that business elites warned would harm the city.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/29\/us-news\/zohran-mamdanis-dsa-allies-make-last-ditch-push-for-show-of-force-ahead-of-nyc-mayoral-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a proud Democratic Socialists of America member<\/a>, also faced repeated questions over his past anti-police stance and accusations of antisemitism for his fierce, long-running criticism of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>His stunning win capped an explosive campaign that exposed rifts in the Democratic Party and drew widespread attention, including from Trump \u2014 who <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/03\/us-news\/trump-tells-new-york-you-must-vote-for-andrew-cuomo-over-zohran-mamdani-in-nyc-election-and-ditch-curtis-sliwa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued an election-eve endorsement of Cuomo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/15\/us-news\/trump-threatens-to-withhold-federal-funds-from-ny-after-hochuls-shocking-mamdani-endorsement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatened to withhold federal funds<\/a> to New York City if Mamdani won.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026AND SO IT BEGINS!\u201d Trump posted on Truth Social during Mamdani\u2019s victory speech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/24\/us-news\/nyc-mayoral-primary-election-live-updates-results-reactions-from-races-across-the-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Follow The Post\u2019s live updates from the NYC mayoral primary as frontrunners Cuomo and Mamdani battle for the <strong>Democratic<\/strong><\/strong> <strong>nomination<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The election\u2019s high stakes inspired a stunning 2 million New Yorkers to cast voters \u2014 the biggest turnout since 1969, preliminary results show.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani appeared poised to claim at least 50% of the vote, and the ability to claim a mandate from the majority of New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p>But Cuomo \u2014 the former three-term Democratic governor who spent $12 million on his campaign and was buoyed by $55 million from supportive super PACs \u2014 argued the New Yorkers who didn\u2019t vote for Mamdani shouldn\u2019t be left behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis campaign was the right fight to wage,\u201d he said in his concession speech. \u201cIt\u2019s also important to note that almost half of New Yorkers did vote to support a government agenda that makes promises that we know cannot be met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Follow the latest on the 2025 New York City mayoral election:<\/p>\n<p>The loss dashed Cuomo\u2019s hopes of a political comeback after he resigned amid a sexual harassment scandal. The ex-gov\u2019s supporters started ditching his campaign\u2019s watch party at Manhattan\u2019s Ziegfeld Ballroom before he even took the stage to speak, with those remaining chanting \u201cshame on Sliwa\u201d \u2014 a dig at the Guardian Angels founder\u2019s alleged spoiler status in the race.<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa conceded the race at around 9:20 p.m. with tears in his eyes as results showed him not cracking 10% support \u2014 and issued a\u00a0stern\u00a0warning about socialism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me warn the new leader, if you try to implement socialism, if you try to render our police weak and impotent, if you forsake the people\u2019s public safety, we\u2019re not only organizing, but we are mobilizing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, a proud Democratic Socialists of America member, also faced repeated questions over his past anti-police stance and accusations of antisemitism for his fierce, long-running criticism of Israel. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>The victory also inspired grief among some Jewish activists, who were fearful about a harsh critic of Israel becoming mayor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers have spoken .\u2009.\u2009. We recognize that voters are animated by a range of issues, but we cannot ignore that the Mayor-elect holds core beliefs fundamentally at odds with our community\u2019s deepest convictions and most cherished values,\u201d the prominent UJA Federation said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The unusual election was the city\u2019s first contest between a trio of viable contenders since 1969 when Republican John Lindsay won in a three-way race.<\/p>\n<p>The general election\u00a0field\u00a0briefly had five candidates, as Cuomo opted to run as an independent alongside incumbent\u00a0scandal-scarred\u00a0Mayor Adams and longshot contender Jim Walden. But the field narrowed as Walden withdrew and Adams \u2014 after a weeks-long melodrama in which the White House tried to entice him to drop out \u2014 eventually ditched his re-election bid.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Post\u2019s front cover for the Nov. 5, 2025 print edition.<\/p>\n<p>The three-way race between Mamdani, Cuomo and Sliwa turned caustic as the trio battled over the future of New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo hammered the public with dire, gloom-and-doom warnings about Mamdani\u2019s lack of executive experience and thin resume, as well as trying to poke holes in the lefty darling\u2019s $10 billion in pie-in-the-sky proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani relentlessly focused on his affordability mantra as he avoided coughing up details in two bruising debates with Cuomo and Sliwa \u2014 and fielded a barrage of criticism over his <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/22\/us-news\/andrew-cuomo-mocks-zohran-mamdani-over-anti-israel-stance-during-nyc-mayoral-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-Israel<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/04\/us-news\/mamdani-expected-to-follow-will-of-nyc-dsa-membership-if-elected-groups-leaders-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pro-socialism<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/16\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-spews-baffling-new-apology-for-calling-nypd-racist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cop-bashing<\/a> stances.<\/p>\n<p>The three-way race between Mamdani, Cuomo and Sliwa turned caustic, as the trio battled over the future of New York City.
