HOUSTON \u2014 The Houston Police Officers\u2019 Union<\/a> is openly\u00a0recruiting New York City police officers\u00a0<\/a>following the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York.<\/p>\n In a social-media post, the union asked:<\/p>\n \u201cNYPD, are you disgusted with the election of Zohran Mamdani? Join us!\u201d<\/p>\n The post urges New York officers to consider joining the Houston Police Department, promoting Texas as a more supportive environment for law enforcement. It highlights a recently approved 36.5 percent pay raise over five years, a \u201csupportive mayor and city council,\u201d and a police chief described as \u201ca retired Texas Ranger, not a politician.\u201d<\/p>\n The union also pointed to benefits such as affordable housing, affordable insurance, and a DROP retirement program available to all officers.<\/p>\n
Mamdani, 34, won the New York mayoral race Tuesday in a major victory for the Democratic Party\u2019s progressive wing. The Democratic Socialist and former state lawmaker becomes New York\u2019s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage, and the youngest in more than a century.<\/p>\n Mamdani pledged to \u201crestore power to the working class\u201d and lead \u201ca city of immigrants.\u201d He defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, promising sweeping changes that include free childcare, city-run grocery stores, and a new Department of Community Safety to handle certain emergency calls with mental-health workers instead of police.<\/p>\n His past criticism of the New York Police Department, including calls to defund it in 2020, has drawn attention since the election. He has since apologized and said he will ask the current NYPD commissioner to stay on.<\/p>\n
