{"id":357632,"date":"2025-11-05T14:40:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T14:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/357632\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T14:40:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T14:40:12","slug":"mark-levine-elected-new-york-city-comptroller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/357632\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Levine elected New York City comptroller"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Levine will be New York City\u2019s next comptroller.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Associated Press, with nearly 90% of the expected vote counted, Levine holds 75.1% of the vote, while Republican Peter Kefalas has 22.8% and independent Ismael Malave Perez has 2.1%.<\/p>\n<p>The outgoing Manhattan borough president joined \u201cMornings On 1\u201d Wednesday, hours after his victory, to reflect on the campaign and outline his goals for the city\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a very contentious race. It\u2019s a divided city, but I will also say that there, I think, is enormous consensus about what voters care about,\u201d Levine said. \u201cThere\u2019s universal fear of an affordability crisis, which is just pushing people out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that frustration with the status quo was a driving factor in the election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople want change,\u201d Levine said. \u201cWe\u2019re not solving their problems \u2014 their affordability problems, their quality-of-life problems, and it\u2019s incumbent on all of us who won last night to get down to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levine said he plans to take an independent approach to the comptroller\u2019s role, serving as both a partner and a watchdog for the new administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be a totally independent comptroller that will fight for the city,\u201d he said. \u201cI want the mayor to succeed. I will help the mayor succeed, but it is my obligation to also bring accountability to every single part of city government and to push back when appropriate. I will be calling balls and strikes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levine said his office will \u201caudit every agency,\u201d emphasizing that inefficiencies across city government are harming New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p>As he prepares to work alongside Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, Levine said the two share priorities around affordability and government reform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe share a key priority of tackling the affordability crisis, of fixing what\u2019s broken with government, of protecting the city from attacks from Trump,\u201d Levine said.<\/p>\n<p>Tap the video player above to watch the full interview.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Mark Levine will be New York City\u2019s next comptroller.
