Cuomo finished second with just over 40%, while Sliwa received<strong> <\/strong>just over 7%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mamdani\u2019s victory came alongside Democratic wins across the country, with Abigail Spanberger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/live\/2025\/nov\/04\/nyc-mayor-election-zohran-mamdani-andrew-cuomo-results-latest?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-690aa7418f08fa7fae305dfb#block-690aa7418f08fa7fae305dfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">elected as<\/a> Virginia\u2019s first female governor, Mikie Sherrill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/live\/2025\/nov\/04\/nyc-mayor-election-zohran-mamdani-andrew-cuomo-results-latest?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-690ab6008f089a1496315839#block-690ab6008f089a1496315839\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">defeating<\/a> the Trump-backed Jack Ciattarelli in the New Jersey gubernatorial race, and California voting for Gavin Newsom\u2019s push for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/04\/california-prop-50-voting-result\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">redistricting maps<\/a> that would yield five new congressional seats for the party.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Zohran Mamdani, elected mayor of New York City, full victory speech \u2013 video \" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/3992.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"460\" class=\"dcr-1qi2at0\"\/>Zohran Mamdani, elected mayor of New York City, full victory speech \u2013 video <\/p>\n<ul class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>How did the New York vote go?<\/strong> Mamdani received more votes than all the other candidates combined. With 97% of votes counted, he was on 50.4% of the total, while Cuomo was on 41.6% and Sliwa on 7.1%.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>What does it mean for the city?<\/strong> Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/05\/wednesday-briefing-improbable-victory-for-citys-first-muslim-mayor-offers-new-playbook-for-fight-against-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wants to<\/a> freeze rent for 2 million people, to raise the minimum wage to $30 an hour, increase taxes on the highest earners, make bus transit free, offer universal childcare and increase affordable housing provision, among other things. Photograph: Jeff Mitchell\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dick Cheney, a former White House chief of staff, member of Congress, secretary of defense and vice-president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/04\/dick-cheney-vice-president-republican-bush-dies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has died aged 84, his family announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He was one of the country\u2019s most powerful US vice-presidents, widely reported to wield great influence over the less experienced George W Bush, under whom he served.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>What is <\/strong><strong>Cheney\u2019s legacy? <\/strong>His place in history will be dominated by the decision to invade Iraq. Cheney had been defense secretary during the first Gulf war against Saddam Hussein. His and Bush\u2019s public rationale to go to war again was that the Iraqi dictator was linked to al-Qaida and thus 9\/11, and possessed weapons of mass destruction. Photograph: Mussa Qawasma\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nasser Abu Srour, a celebrated Palestinian author who was freed last month after more than 32 years in Israeli prisons, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/04\/freed-palestinian-author-nasser-abu-srour-israel-prisons-gaza-war\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said the use of torture increased dramatically<\/a> during his last two years of captivity \u2013 as Israel came to treat its jails as \u201canother front\u201d in the Gaza war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Abu Srour, 56, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2024\/apr\/25\/the-tale-of-a-wall-by-nasser-abu-srour-review-a-palestinian-prisoner-writes\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prison memoir<\/a> is tipped to win a big international literary prize this month, was among more than 150 Palestinians serving life sentences who were freed as part of the Gaza ceasefire and then exiled to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey [the prison guards] started acting like they were in a war and this was another front, and they started beating, torturing, killing like warriors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>What do we know about conditions in Israeli prisons?<\/strong> Dozens of mutilated bodies of Palestinians were returned by Israel to Gaza, officials fromthe territory\u2019s health ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/20\/mutilated-bodies-palestinians-held-notorious-israeli-jail-gaza-officials\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the Guardian last month<\/a>.
