I\u2019m his main caregiver, and I have dedicated my life to his wellbeing (happily, of course!). But at points it has meant putting my own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/beauty\/body\/a46869068\/sensory-deprivation-wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/beauty\/body\/a46869068\/sensory-deprivation-wellness\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"self-care\" data-node-id=\"1.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">self-care<\/a> aside. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">When the pandemic happened in 2020, like for many people, it hit me pretty bad. I had more roles to fill than ever before, in addition to being a mother. I was a teacher, a speech and language therapist, an occupational therapist,  and an applied behaviour analysis therapist to my son. (I&#8217;m also an esthetician.) Fulfilling all of those duties all while being stuck inside became too much. I let myself go\u2014I was mentally and physically exhausted.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">Before the pandemic, I worked out here and there. Sometimes I went to the gym and did kickboxing classes with one of my brothers  (he owns a Karate Dojo). But I would only go for short periods of time, on and off. I never committed and I  gave up very quickly because I did not have the right mindset, or the knowledge about the importance  and benefits of working out and nutrition as fuel for the body.   <\/p>\n<p>What to Read NextI knew my lifestyle needed to change to better both my mental and physical health, so I started my strength journey in January 2021<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">I didn&#8217;t want to get strong just to change my body. I knew I had lost my shine, and I wanted it back. I felt unhealthy, unhappy. I needed to carve out time for myself to be healthy and fit, too, in order to be able to take care of my son. It took me almost 12 years of being a mum to realise this, and I\u2019m glad that I did. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">It was easiest for me to work out at home because of my situation with my son. <\/p>\n<p>A friend of mine invited me to join a fitness programme\u2014and I quickly fell in love with the community<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">I signed up for a programme via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbody.com\/en\/product\/bodi.do\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.beachbody.com\/en\/product\/bodi.do\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"BODi by Beachbody\" data-node-id=\"19.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BODi by Beachbody<\/a>, which offers a wide variety of on-demand classes and easy-to-follow workout plans. I really liked that within the programme there is also an emphasis on personal growth; it was not all about aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">I\u2019m currently doing Beachbody&#8217;s 12-week Beast strength programme, which involves working out six days a week with one day of rest.  It is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a69219181\/30-20-10-workout-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a69219181\/30-20-10-workout-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"high-intensity\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">high-intensity<\/a>, physically demanding home  fitness programme in combination with an in-depth nutrition plan. In each phase, you calculate your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/weight-loss\/a60228772\/what-is-calorie-deficit\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/weight-loss\/a60228772\/what-is-calorie-deficit\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"calorie target\" data-node-id=\"26.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">calorie target<\/a> with a specific equation to help inform your eating plan based on calorie intake per day. I love it because I eat a lot! <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">When I first started, I did not have the strength to do even a single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a700370\/how-to-do-a-push-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a700370\/how-to-do-a-push-up\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"push-up\" data-node-id=\"29.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">push-up<\/a>\u2013not even on my knees. Little by little, I developed the technique and I was able to build the strength to do them. Now, I can do 15 push-ups without stopping. I\u2019m getting stronger every day.  <\/p>\n<p>This journey has taught me so much more about myself and my drive than I expected<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">At the beginning, I can admit that my motivation was partially about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a69234777\/meghan-trainor-weight-loss-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a69234777\/meghan-trainor-weight-loss-exercise\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"losing weight\" data-node-id=\"32.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">losing weight<\/a>\u2014to see a specific number on the scale. But that quickly shifted. When I reflect on my journey, I realise how I now see food as a source of nutrition, of wellbeing, the source of health. I&#8217;ve learned how to live to fuel my body and my strength.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">But most importantly, I\u2019m finally making time for myself. My workout time is sacred. It\u2019s me &#8220;me&#8221; time\u2014and this strength-training journey has helped me solidify this self-care time into my life.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">I remind myself that I\u2019m working out to get better, to feel better, to get stronger and happy. I\u2019m proud of my commitment to living a healthy and active lifestyle. I\u2019m proud of the  relationship that I have with food. I\u2019m proud that I have kept my promise to take care of myself. <\/p>\n<p>As parents, we too often forget about us and our needs. But we can only be quality caregivers if we care for ourselves first<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"41\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">Being a mum-caregiver for a child with special needs means giving and dedicating your life to your child. Because of that, sometimes when we decide to do something for ourselves, we feel like we are committing an act of selfishness. As I mentioned before, it took me 12 years (!) of being a mum to realise that I needed to take care of me for him.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"43\" class=\"css-19ghd8k emevuu60\">I&#8217;m now 42 years old\u2014and I am proud. There\u2019s a song called \u201cSe\u00f1ora de las Cuatro D\u00e9cadas\u201d (which means &#8220;lady of the four decades&#8221;) by Guatemalan singer Ricardo Arjona. I sang it in my 20s, and now, I\u2019m that lady! But now, I feel amazing.
