Dodgers and Lakers bringing \u2018enormous sway over\u2019 L.A."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \">Following Dodgers owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/06\/25\/mark-walters-lakers-acquisition-set-to-close-by-q4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/06\/25\/mark-walters-lakers-acquisition-set-to-close-by-q4\/\">Mark Walter\u2019s acquisition of a majority stake in the Lakers<\/a>, VARIETY\u2019s Cynthia Littleton said having \u201ctwo marquee properties\u201d gives him \u201cenormous sway over\u201d sports and L.A. \u201cin ways that we probably can\u2019t even fathom yet.\u201d She added the Lakers last week finally put out a press release \u201cconfirming\u201d that Walter is now the majority owner of the team. He bought his stake from the Buss family that has owned the team since the late 1970s. Littleton, speaking on the \u201cDaily Variety\u201d podcast, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/11\/04\/leonsis-owning-teams-in-multiple-leagues-may-be-model-for-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/11\/04\/leonsis-owning-teams-in-multiple-leagues-may-be-model-for-success\/\">Walter\u2018s latest acquisition<\/a> \u201ccertainly puts him in an interesting perch\u201d for the 2028 L.A. Games. Littleton: \u201cDodgers fans like me would have a hard time finding fault with the team\u2019s trajectory under Walter\u2019s ownership. The boys in blue just notched back-to-back World Series wins. But control of the blue crew and the purple and gold is significant and another sign of the relentless business consolidation in our world\u201d (\u201cDaily Variety,\u201d Variety, 11\/3).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-franchises \"><b>THE BIGGER VISION<\/b>: T\u2019Wolves owner Alex Rodriguez said when Walter paid $2.2B for the Dodgers, he \u201cwas the laughing stock of the market.\u201d Rodriguez said what Walter \u201cknew more than anybody\u201d is that he had $250M a year \u201ccoming for basically the next 20 years from the TV contract.\u201d Rodriguez: \u201cThe fact that they\u2019re the first team ever in Major League Baseball sports to go over a billion dollars in gross revenue.
