{"id":358363,"date":"2025-11-05T22:04:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T22:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/358363\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T22:04:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T22:04:16","slug":"jury-chews-over-fate-of-sandwich-guy-who-became-a-d-c-hero-after-chucking-a-sub-at-a-federal-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/358363\/","title":{"rendered":"Jury chews over fate of &#8216;sandwich guy,&#8217; who became a D.C. hero after chucking a sub at a federal officer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-d055d6\" class=\"body-graf\">WASHINGTON \u2014 A federal jury on Wednesday began deliberating a verdict in the case against a man dubbed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/jury-selection-begins-case-dcs-sandwich-guy-rcna241563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sandwich guy<\/a>\u201d after he tossed a Subway footlong at a federal officer who was patrolling city streets on President Donald Trump&#8217;s orders. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-204830\" class=\"body-graf\">Sean Dunn, a former Justice Department paralegal, faces a single misdemeanor count after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/grand-jury-declines-indict-sandwich-guy-threw-sub-dc-federal-officer-rcna227464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">federal grand jury refused to indict<\/a> him on the felony charges sought by the Trump administration. The charge stems from an incident in August when Dunn, wearing a pink shirt, confronted officers in the nightlife area at 14th and U St. NW, eventually tossing a salami sub at a federal officer\u2019s ballistic vest.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4b3c20\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis case, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is about a sandwich,\u201d defense attorney Sabrina Shroff told members of the jury during closing arguments on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b8b824\" class=\"body-graf\">Shroff said that the Border Patrol Officer Greg Lairmore gave \u201cvery questionable testimony\u201d when he claimed that the sandwich &#8220;exploded all over&#8221; his chest and claimed he could smell the mustard and onions. A photo shows that the sandwich was still in its wrapper on the ground after it hit Lairmore in his bulletproof vest. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-817f79\" class=\"body-graf\">A sandwich, Shroff said, cannot be a weapon hurled with force anywhere near enough to justify federal charges, and a bulletproof vest, she said, \u201cis definitely going to keep you safe from a sandwich thrown at you.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/251105-sean-dunn-arrest-gk-8f0438.jpg\" alt=\"FBI and Border Patrol officers arrest Sean Charles Dunn.\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\"\/>Sean Dunn is arrested after throwing the sandwich.Andrew Leyden \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-840e2b\" class=\"body-graf\">Shroff also said the two \u201cgag gifts\u201d that Lairmore received \u2014 a plush sandwich and a patch featuring a cartoon of Dunn throwing the sandwich with the words \u201cFelony Footlong\u201d \u2014 showed that this was not a serious event in Lairmore\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6ee810\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIf someone assaulted you, if someone offended you, would you keep a memento of their assault? Would you stick it on your daily lunchbox and carry it with you day in and day out?\u201d she asked jurors. She said that Lairmore and his colleagues clearly found the situation funny.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d6be89\" class=\"body-graf\">Shroff asked jurors if the situation was really all that different from an 8-year-old or a 10-year-old throwing a temper tantrum.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-842efc\" class=\"body-graf\">Shroff said the incident was about Dunn\u2019s \u201cstrongly held feelings\u201d about immigration enforcement, and tried to raise the jury\u2019s ire about Trump\u2019s executive order that put federal law enforcement members on the streets of the city.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ac3425\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cYou are the ones impacted by the executive orders\u2026 there was and remains a huge law enforcement presence in the district,\u2019 Shroff said before prosecutors objected.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f64649\" class=\"body-graf\">Dunn became somewhat of a <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonian.com\/2025\/08\/18\/sandwich-guy-has-become-dcs-hero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">symbol of resistance<\/a> in Washington, the subject of murals and Halloween costumes for those showing support for pushing back on the Trump administration\u2019s takeover of policing in the city.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/250828-sandiwich-guy-art-mn-1300-e6d1d9.jpg\" alt=\"A person walks past Banksy-style posters of a protester throwing a sandwich on Aug. 21, 2025.\" height=\"1200\" width=\"1800\"\/>A person walks past Banksy-style posters of a protester throwing a sandwich.Kevin Dietsch \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-977632\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe sandwich did not impede Officer Lairmore\u2019s duties that night,\u201d Shroff said. \u201cA footlong from Subway could not and certainly did not inflict bodily harm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c331ff\" class=\"body-graf\">On rebuttal, a federal prosecutor told jurors that the case wasn&#8217;t about dissent or opposition to government actions, saying that the defendant was asking for a &#8220;free pass&#8221; on his behavior. The prosecutor said that Dunn tossed the footlong like a &#8220;baseball pitch, even if it\u2019s a sandwich,&#8221; and that they had proven that Dunn was guilty. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bf3438\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">&#8220;We\u2019re not just talking about a sandwich,&#8221; Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael C.
