{"id":358388,"date":"2025-11-05T22:17:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T22:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/358388\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T22:17:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T22:17:18","slug":"sky-harbor-ground-delay-issued-for-2nd-consecutive-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/358388\/","title":{"rendered":"Sky Harbor ground delay issued for 2nd consecutive day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX \u2013 For the second consecutive day, authorities issued a staffing-related ground delay advisory for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Flights to Sky Harbor were expected to be an average of nearly two hours late from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., with the <a href=\"https:\/\/nasstatus.faa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">disruptions projected<\/a> to worsen as the day progresses, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the delays are expected to average two hours or more from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA temporarily slows down or stops flight activity whenever airports are short of air traffic controllers, something that is happening more often during the government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>How many Sky Harbor flights were delayed?<\/p>\n<p>Sky Harbor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PHXSkyHarbor\/status\/1986162362106126351\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">social media accounts<\/a> said the airport was anticipating delays due to air traffic capacity constraints.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightaware.com\/live\/cancelled\/today\/phx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Flight-tracking website FlightAware<\/a> listed 224 delays and 18 cancellations on Wednesday for flights into or out of Phoenix as of 1:40 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyharbor.com\/flights\/delayed-canceled-and-diverted-flights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sky Harbor website<\/a> showed nearly 240 departures that were scheduled between 1 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Thursday as delayed and 18 canceled.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s numbers are higher than they were during <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-news\/ground-delay-sky-harbor-staffing\/5770415\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tuesday\u2019s ground delay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sky Harbor officials have been encouraging passengers to monitor their flight status before leaving for the airport and leave plenty of time to get through security.<\/p>\n<p>The Phoenix airport <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyharbor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">maintains a webpage<\/a> that shows current security wait times.<\/p>\n<p>Staffing shortages disrupting air travel nationwide during shutdown<\/p>\n<p>As essential workers, air traffic controllers are required to work without pay during the shutdown with the expectation they will be reimbursed once the government reopens. However, more controllers are calling out sick to protest the situation.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/government-shutdown-air-traffic-controllers-duffy-delays-9afedfa9e5000510c77465808404c830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy predicted<\/a> that staffing shortages could create \u201cmass chaos\u201d if the shutdown causes controllers to miss a second paycheck next week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will see mass flight delays, you\u2019ll see mass cancellations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it because we don\u2019t have air traffic controllers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep.
