Cardinal Robert McElroy, who led the Catholic Diocese of San Diego for a decade, is set to undergo surgery after he was diagnosed with cancer, the Archdiocese of Washington announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n
McElroy \u2014 who now serves as the archbishop of Washington \u2014 was diagnosed with well-differentiated liposarcoma, a “non-aggressive cancer,” according to a statement from the archdiocese.<\/p>\n
He will undergo surgery next Thursday, and his prognosis is said to be “very good.”<\/p>\n
The cardinal says he plans to resume his full duties by the end of this month.<\/p>\n
