(Chicago Herald and Examiner)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1923:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-mary-bartelme-first-judg\/184358885\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Bartelme<\/a> was elected Circuit Court judge, becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/11\/19\/chicagos-trailblazing-first-female-judge-known-for-looking-after-juveniles-stating-there-are-no-bad-children\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago\u2019s first female judge<\/a> and the first woman judge in Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the first time Illinois has elected a woman to a court of such high jurisdiction,\u201d the Tribune reported. \u201cLast night as the returns came in they revived recollections of the historic night years ago when Mrs. Catharine Waugh McCulloch first cracked the ice by winning election as justice of the peace in Evanston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After retiring from the bench in 1933, Bartelme, who never married, moved to Carmel, California, where she <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-judge-mary-bartelme-88\/184359169\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died in 1954<\/a>. \u201cOne of her last wishes,\u201d according to the Tribune, \u201cwas that instead of flowers, contributions be sent to the Mary Bartelme club, which she founded in 1914 to provide homes for dependent girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"SfrGhSozo1\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/08\/22\/vintage-chicago-tribune-tradition-of-acceptance-speeches-at-political-conventions-began-in-chicago\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Tradition of acceptance speeches at political conventions began in Chicago<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1956:<\/strong> Former Illinois Gov. Adlai Stevenson II was defeated \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ike-by-landslide-chica\/153764770\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">again<\/a> \u2014 by Dwight D. Joe Walsh to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the northwest suburban 8th Congressional District. Osorio\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> The Chicago Blackhawks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2018\/11\/06\/looking-for-a-fresh-start-blackhawks-fire-3-time-champion-coach-joel-quenneville\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fired Joel Quenneville<\/a>, the team\u2019s 37th coach in franchise history, six games into the 2018-19 season. \u201cCoach Q\u201d led the Hawks to three Stanley Cup championships.<\/p>\n<p>He resigned as coach of the Florida Panthers in 2021, two days after the second-winningest coach in NHL history was among those implicated for not swiftly responding to allegations by a Blackhawks player of being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/10\/29\/joel-quenneville-resigns-as-florida-panthers-coach-amid-chicago-blackhawks-scandal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sexually assaulted by another coach<\/a> during the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>Quenneville is currently the coach of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/joel-quenneville-hired-as-anaheim-ducks-coach\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/joel-quenneville-hired-as-anaheim-ducks-coach\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Chicago Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton stands near the bench during the first period against the Nashville Predators at the United Center on March 28, 2021, in Chicago. Sanchez\/ChicagoTribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2021:<\/strong> The Blackhawks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/11\/06\/jeremy-colliton-is-fired-as-chicago-blackhawks-coach-after-a-1-9-2-start-to-his-4th-season-our-play-and-competitiveness-must-improve\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fired Jeremy Colliton<\/a> 12 games into his fourth season as the team\u2019s coach \u2014 and three years to the date of his hiring. (Brian Cassella\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2023:<\/strong> The Chicago Cubs announced they were bringing in former Milwaukee Brewers manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/11\/06\/chicago-cubs-hire-craig-counsell-to-replace-manager-david-ross-who-is-out-after-4-seasons-on-the-job\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Craig Counsell<\/a> and were moving on from David Ross.
