But is it advisable to have fermented curd rice for all three meals every day for three months? Dt Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, answers that question for us below.

What are the benefits of eating curd rice regularly?

Regular consumption of curd rice helps regulate gut bacteria, digestive function, and keeps the stomach feeling cool, Sheikh said. “It is also beneficial because it aids the digestive system, helps in reducing acidity and is nutrient-dense, including calcium, protein, and good fats from the curd. For people living in hotter climates and with delicate stomachs, it would serve as a comfortable meal (especially helpful for maintaining hydration and gut health).

Is it safe to eat overnight curd rice?

This depends on how it is stored. “When left unrefrigerated, produced overnight, curd rice may ferment too much and become unsafe for consumption due to harmful bacteria. This is especially true if the temperature is warm. However, when refrigerated correctly, the rice should maintain all the probiotic benefits associated with consumption, and is safe to eat,” said Sheikh.

Story continues below this ad

Hygiene is important. Ensure that all storage containers are clean, and do not reheat multiple times, Sheikh added.

What happens to your body if you eat curd rice for all meals for 3 months?

Eating overnight curd rice for every meal might seem light and comforting, but doing it daily for months can have negative effects, Sheikh said. “Curd rice contains probiotics, calcium, and is easy to digest. However, when it’s kept overnight, it may lose some beneficial bacteria and become overly fermented, especially in warm weather. This can upset your gut balance and cause bloating or even trigger acidity,” Sheikh said.

Additionally, eating the same food repeatedly creates nutrient gaps. Sheikh explained that your body may miss out on protein, fibre, vitamins, and healthy fats that are essential for energy and immunity. “While curd rice is great as a cool and occasional meal, depending on it three times a day for months can leave you undernourished and sluggish. As a result, fatigue, dull skin, hair loss, or even muscle loss may result from a lack of protein diversity. Balance is important,” said Sheikh.

Eat hygienic food to prevent digestive issues (Photo: Getty Images/Thinkstock)
What to note?

Pair it wisely. Pair it with vegetables, dal, or a protein source for a more balanced meal. Add vegetables like cucumber, grated carrot, or pomegranate for fibre and nutrients. “A side of lentils or lightly spiced curry can make it more balanced. It’s also better to eat freshly made or well-stored curd rice to avoid stomach upsets,” cautioned Sheikh.

Story continues below this ad

Curd rice is healthy as part of a balanced diet; it keeps the gut happy, mollifies inflammation, and aids digestion.
