{"id":360075,"date":"2025-11-06T15:40:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T15:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/360075\/"},"modified":"2025-11-06T15:40:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T15:40:19","slug":"houston-grand-opera-announces-new-music-director-houston-public-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/360075\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston Grand Opera announces new music director \u2013 Houston Public Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-535162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/\u00a9-Mikel-Ponce-5-1000x667.jpg\" alt=\"Conductor leads orchestra\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"   data-eio=\"p\"\/>American conductor James Gaffigan will begin his tenure with Houston Grand Opera for the 2026-2027 season.<\/p>\n<p>Houston\u2019s premier opera company, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.houstongrandopera.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Houston Grand Opera<\/a>, welcomes a new creative leader in conductor <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesgaffigan.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">James Gaffigan<\/a>, who will step into the role of music director after the departure of longtime Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers after the 2025-2026 season.<\/p>\n<p>Gaffigan has many ties to Houston \u2014 he received his master\u2019s degree from Rice University and has visited for a number of guest conducting jobs with the Houston Symphony and Houston Grand Opera (HGO). He is currently leading this year\u2019s HGO production of Porgy &amp; Bess.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his first experiences in the city, Gaffigan says Houston made quite the impression:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fell in love with Houston back when I was 21 years old \u2026 it was so different to anything I\u2019d ever experienced in the United States,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-535163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/PandB_OrchestralRehearsal_Edits-3326_credit-Alana-Campbell-1000x667.jpg\" alt=\"Conductor rehearses with orchestra\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"   data-eio=\"p\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Alana Campbell<\/p>\n<p>James Gaffigan leads the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra in a rehearsal for the 2025 production of Porgy &amp; Bess.<\/p>\n<p>He also highlights the community\u2019s support for the arts and organizations like Houston Grand Opera as a major factor in his decision to take the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I looked at all the healthy institutions in America, the one that stood out to me was HGO,\u201d he said. \u201cOf all the opera houses, it has the most extraordinary financial health, and the tradition of philanthropy in this city is second to none.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his role as music director, he will work closely with General Director Khori Dastoor to design each season of shows. Dastoor says Gaffigan is the exact person the opera company needs at this point in its history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a catalyst for growth, he is energetic, his vision is ambitious, and it matches the moment,\u201d Dastoor said.<\/p>\n<p>Gaffigan has most recently held posts as the general music director of Komische Oper Berlin and music director of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sof\u00eda in Valencia, Spain.
