He was 24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Kneeland\u2019s great uncle, Preston Kneeland, confirmed the news when reached by phone Thursday morning, and told The Dallas Morning News his nephew was an \u201coutstanding young man.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cHe was the gentle giant,\u201d Preston said. \u201cHe was just an outstanding dude, and we loved him very much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The police chase started shortly after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in the northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway near Keller Springs Boulevard, Frisco police said.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboys<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-article-cta-social-module__3beff secondaryRoman secondaryRoman-20 text-center text-gray-dark\">Be the smartest Cowboys fan. Troopers reportedly lost sight of Kneeland\u2019s vehicle in the midst of the chase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">According to Jerry Minton, a spokesman for the Plano Police Department, Plano officers responded about 11:30 p.m. to a \u201cwelfare concern\u201d at Kneeland\u2019s luxury apartment complex in the 6000 block of Columbus Avenue, but no one was home. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The street outside the apartment where Kneeland had lived since last September was calm Thursday morning as office workers walked by the building located near Legacy West and a corporate office for J.P. Morgan Chase. When asked, many residents leaving their homes for morning runs and to walk their dogs said they weren\u2019t aware that Kneeland lived there. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In an audio recording obtained by The News, Kneeland\u2019s girlfriend, who was not identified by authorities, told police Kneeland was armed, had a history of mental illness and would \u201cend it all.\u201d Police said Kneeland\u2019s girlfriend was trying to contact his agent as they were trying to get her to contact Kneeland, according to the recording. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Minutes before midnight, police said in the recording that they were on the phone with the NFL when they learned Kneeland had already texted his family goodbye.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Troopers found Kneeland\u2019s vehicle damaged and abandoned on a southbound lane of the Dallas North Tollway, officials said. With the help of police dogs and drones, Kneeland was found in the area about 1:30 a.m., dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In a statement released Thursday morning, the Cowboys called Kneeland a \u201cbeloved teammate and member of our organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cOur thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family,\u201d the statement said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In their own statement, the Kneeland family said they are \u201cprocessing the depth of our grief,\u201d and noted that although Kneeland was best known for the mark he was making on the football field, he was also a devoted son, brother, uncle, grandson and friend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cHe was kind, determined, humble, and full of love,\u201d the statement read. \u201cHis light shone brightly in every life he touched, and his spirit will continue to live on through the countless hearts he inspired. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cDuring this difficult time, we ask for privacy as we come together as a family to honor and remember Marshawn\u2019s life and legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The gentle giant\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Kneeland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2024\/04\/26\/dallas-cowboys-select-western-michigan-de-marshawn-kneeland-at-no-56-overall-in-nfl-draft\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2024\/04\/26\/dallas-cowboys-select-western-michigan-de-marshawn-kneeland-at-no-56-overall-in-nfl-draft\/\">was the Cowboys\u2019 second-round pick out of Western Michigan in the 2024 NFL draft.<\/a> In nearly two seasons, he played in 18 games with four starts, compiling 26 tackles and one sack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In Kneeland\u2019s last game, he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for his first career touchdown in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2025\/11\/03\/dallas-cowboys-arizona-cardinals-takeaways-monday-night-football\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2025\/11\/03\/dallas-cowboys-arizona-cardinals-takeaways-monday-night-football\/\">Cowboys\u2019 27-17 loss Monday night to the Arizona Cardinals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In his final year of college, Kneeland, who is from Grand Rapids, Mich., had a career-high 57 tackles with seven tackles for loss and four and a half sacks. He received second-team honors in the Mid-American Conference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cMarshawn was so much more than an incredible football player \u2014 he was a remarkable young man who meant so much to our program and to me personally,&#8221; Western Michigan head football coach Lance Taylor wrote in a statement. \u201cHaving coached him during my first season here, we developed a special bond that went far beyond football. His passion for life and his teammates were unmatched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">As Kneeland was preparing for the NFL draft, his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2024\/06\/30\/dallas-cowboys-marshawn-kneeland-mother-memory-nfl-draft-rookie\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2024\/06\/30\/dallas-cowboys-marshawn-kneeland-mother-memory-nfl-draft-rookie\/\">mother, Wendy Kneeland, passed away suddenly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIt was definitely tough,\u201d Kneeland said after getting drafted. \u201cI just managed it. She helped me a lot in my younger years getting into football. I always had the dream. I always told her, \u2018I\u2019m going to the NFL\u2019 and I made it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Kneeland wore his mother\u2019s ashes on a necklace after he was drafted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys\u2019 Marshawn Kneeland,\u201d the NFL said in a written statement. \u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, family, friends and his teammates.
