Bedford City Council has approved a $2.9 million contract with HCI Commercial<\/a> to renovate Fire Station No. 2.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The project, approved by the council at its Oct. 28 meeting<\/a>, will eliminate the need for fire trucks and ambulances to enter or exit the building in reverse, Bedford Fire Chief Bill Walker said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have to back up fire engines, we don\u2019t have to back up ambulances, which is a big deal for us, we don\u2019t like doing that,\u201d Walker said of the pull-through improvement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Station No. 2<\/a> makeover adds individual rooms for privacy, fixes leaks, removes mold, adds approximately 1,100 square feet and creates a fume-free room for protective gear worn by firefighters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entire dorm area is being removed and extended out,\u201d Walker said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The council in 2024<\/a> approved Dallas-based HCI<\/a> for a $435,000 contract to renovate Station No. 3<\/a>. For Station No. 2, the city chose HCI from 19 bidders for a $2.9 million renovation contract. The total budgets for the two projects are $708,784 and $3.35 million, respectively.<\/p>\n

The Station No. 2 renovation has an estimated 243-day project timeline. Firefighters will be temporarily housed in a mobile home at Station No. 1 during construction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was also some other really good competition out there,\u201d Walker said. HCI Commercial \u201cultimately came out No. 1 in that process.\u201d<\/p>\n
