{"id":360858,"date":"2025-11-06T23:22:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T23:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/360858\/"},"modified":"2025-11-06T23:22:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T23:22:16","slug":"chicago-nonprofits-unite-to-help-families-feed-pets-amid-snap-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/360858\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago nonprofits unite to help families feed pets amid SNAP cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4CA758E63970100C7E6DD4E4D4D9E3D7.jpg\" alt=\"Support for pet owners impacted by SNAP cuts\" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-7a5d4fdb=\"\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\"><strong>CHICAGO<\/strong> &#8211; Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox32chicago.com\/news\/trump-fully-fund-snap-benefits-november-federal-judge-orders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a federal judge&#8217;s order out of Rhode Island<\/a> on Thursday afternoon requiring the White House to resume full SNAP benefits in November, many families have been forced to face difficult decisions in recent days.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">For some, it\u2019s been a heartbreaking choice between feeding themselves or feeding their pets.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WFLD\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">While SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy pet food, community members who rely on food stamps to purchase their own groceries have had fewer resources to feed their four-legged friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Now, organizations like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onetail.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Tail at a Time<\/a> in Bucktown and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livelikeroo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Like Roo<\/a> in Arlington Heights are stepping up to meet the need.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">One Tail at a Time, an animal rescue and adoption center, will hold two free pet pantries on Friday \u2014 one at The Bloc (1345 N. Karlov Ave.) in Humboldt Park at 11:30 a.m. and another at the Pilsen Food Pantry (2124 S. Ashland Ave.) at 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">They will mark the first pantries since SNAP benefits were cut, and Carolina Hernandez\u2014the nonprofit&#8217;s director of pet mutual aid\u2014said she is expecting a big turnout.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;Families understand that their pets need to be fed and if they&#8217;re not able to do it, they&#8217;re going to try to find an alternative for their pet. Our goal is to make sure that they can stay together,&#8221; Hernandez said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Meanwhile in Arlington Heights, Sarah Lauch (who happens to be the family member of a FOX 32 employee) is the executive director of Live Like Roo \u2014\u00a0a nonprofit that supports animals with cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">In recent days, however, she&#8217;s expanded her reach by launching &#8216;Roo&#8217;s Kindness Cupboard,&#8217; a pet pantry that will help bridge the gap for SNAP recipients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">She says her goal is to keep furry friends with their families.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;This morning, I was sending orders to Pet Supplies Plus stores across Chicagoland and people were picking up their food this morning.
