A bright, sparky, witty presence on stage and screen. Her illustrious career saw her play politicians, mothers and queens,\u201d read the statement. \u201cShe will always be remembered as the iconic, strong-willed, vivacious and wise Shirley Valentine \u2013 a role that she made all her own. We were familiar with all those parts of her because her magic was contained in each one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCollins was born on September 3, 1940, in Exmouth and trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tShe broke out at home in the 1970s in her role of storied domestic Sarah Moffat in the series Upstairs, Downstairs and its spinoff\u00a0Thomas &amp; Sarah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn 1989, she achieved international renown for her performance in Shirley Valentine, a big-screen adaptation of Willy Russell\u2019s play for which she already had won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe drama followed the fortunes of a middle-aged, working-class housewife from Liverpool who gets a new lease of life when she wins a holiday to Greece.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCollins won the Bafta for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as well as an Academy Awards nomination.
