{"id":361083,"date":"2025-11-07T01:35:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T01:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/361083\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T01:35:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T01:35:12","slug":"mexican-president-claudia-sheinbaum-declared-persona-non-grata-by-perus-congress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/361083\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declared persona non grata by Peru&#8217;s Congress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LIMA, Peru (AP) \u2014 Peru\u2019s Congress on Thursday declared <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-claudia-sheinbaum-woman-president-aa24527fc05dafa9e30b28e4bb40ccbd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum<\/a> persona non grata after Mexico decided to grant asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Ch\u00e1vez, in what Peruvian officials called repeated interference in the South American country\u2019s internal affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The legislative decision was adopted with 63 votes in favor, 34 against and two absentee votes, after a debate in which right-wing congressmen argued that Sheinbaum has maintained a hostile position towards Peru since she took office in 2024 by backing former <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/peru-trial-castillo-protests-062a0684d26868d1d085850b47942434\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peruvian President Pedro Castillo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo, who ordered the dissolution of Parliament in December 2022, was removed from office and remains in detention on charges of alleged rebellion and conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s Foreign Affairs Ministry said later Thursday that the congressional action was based on \u201cfalse assertions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMexico has not intervened in any way in Peru\u2019s internal affairs,\u201d the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Peru\u2019s interim President Jos\u00e9 Jer\u00ed <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/peru-diplomatic-relations-mexico-asylum-betssy-chavez-5586348c237292ba328afd069412901b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">severed diplomatic relations with Mexico<\/a> over Sheinbaum\u2019s decision to grant asylum to Ch\u00e1vez, who is being prosecuted for the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/peru-caribbean-government-pedro-castillo-62923886f7c53b1dcceb0db84cb09888\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attempted dissolution of Congress in 2022<\/a> led by Castillo.
