{"id":361085,"date":"2025-11-07T01:36:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T01:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/361085\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T01:36:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T01:36:17","slug":"dfw-love-field-targeted-for-reductions-as-shutdown-rages-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/361085\/","title":{"rendered":"DFW, Love Field targeted for reductions as shutdown rages on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The Federal Aviation Administration will reduce flights at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/dfw-airport\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/dfw-airport\/\">DFW International Airport<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/love-field\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/love-field\/\">Dallas Love Field<\/a> and a swath of other major U.S. airports in an unprecedented move as the ongoing government shutdown wreaks havoc on the aviation sector, the FAA confirmed Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The U.S. Department of Transportation confirmed the \u201ctemporary\u201d 10% flight reductions in an email Friday, adding that it will be spread out in phases. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A 4% flight reduction will take effect Friday, before increasing to 6% by Nov. 11, 8% by Nov. 13 and 10% by Nov. 14. International flights are not required to be included in the reduction, the department said, adding that carrier\u2019s can decide which flights to cancel to meet the reduction goal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">There were 2,740 delays at various airports this past weekend, the department said.<\/p>\n<p>Aviation News<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-article-cta-social-module__3beff secondaryRoman secondaryRoman-20 text-center text-gray-dark\">Stay prepared. Still, few official details are known about how it will affect airports and airlines. A 10% cut in flights at DFW could mean 96 fewer departing flights, or more than 13,000 fewer seats, according to data from Diio by Cirium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Including takeoffs and departures, DFW handles roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/airlines\/2023\/09\/13\/over-200000-travelers-and-1800-flights-a-day-in-the-life-of-dfw-international-airport\/#:~:text=The%20second%2Dbusiest%20airport%20in%20the%20world%2C%20consisting%20of%2017%2C183,of%20the%20airport%20in%202022.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/airlines\/2023\/09\/13\/over-200000-travelers-and-1800-flights-a-day-in-the-life-of-dfw-international-airport\/#:~:text=The%20second%2Dbusiest%20airport%20in%20the%20world%2C%20consisting%20of%2017%2C183,of%20the%20airport%20in%202022.\">1,800 flights per day<\/a> and Love Field has about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/airlines\/2018\/07\/11\/here-are-the-dfw-airport-and-love-field-routes-that-generate-the-most-cash-for-airlines\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/airlines\/2018\/07\/11\/here-are-the-dfw-airport-and-love-field-routes-that-generate-the-most-cash-for-airlines\/\">200 departures per day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Love Field could see cuts of 20 flights a day, or roughly 3,000 seats, Cirium\u2019s data shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Houston\u2019s two major airports, Houston Intercontinental and Houston Hobby, also are on the FAA\u2019s list for flight reductions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Captain Dennis Tajer, spokesperson for the Allied Pilots Association, the union that represents American Airlines pilots, said the decision to slash flights is a \u201csafety maneuver to ensure that we maintain the safety margin.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWhile it will be impactful to our passengers and to American Airlines and other airlines financially, it sure beats the alternative of having an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Media representatives for North Texas\u2019 hometown airlines, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/place\/20be97be-55fe-dd09-4a58-bc78e7479c4f\/southwest-airlines\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/place\/20be97be-55fe-dd09-4a58-bc78e7479c4f\/southwest-airlines\/\">Southwest<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/american-airlines\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/american-airlines\/\">American<\/a>, gave statements to The News in response to an inquiry about how their operations would be affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Southwest said Wednesday afternoon it was still evaluating the effects of the flight cuts on the carrier\u2019s schedule and \u201cwill communicate directly with customers as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">American echoed a similar sentiment, saying it was waiting for additional information from the FAA, adding the carrier expects the \u201cvast majority of our customers\u2019 travel will be unaffected.\u201d Long-haul international flights will remain on schedule, the airline said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">American said customers whose flights are canceled or who choose not to travel will be able to change their flight or request a refund without penalty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">DFW Airport is the central hub of Fort Worth-based American Airlines. Love Field is the headquarters of Southwest Airlines, which operates 18 of the airport\u2019s 20 gates. The airports have started to see effects of the shutdown within the past week. The FAA issued ground delays at DFW Airport on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/transportation\/2025\/10\/31\/staffing-shortage-leads-to-third-ground-delay-this-week-at-dfw-airport-faa-says\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/transportation\/2025\/10\/31\/staffing-shortage-leads-to-third-ground-delay-this-week-at-dfw-airport-faa-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">three separate days<\/a> last week. On Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/airlines\/2025\/11\/03\/love-field-flights-paused-due-to-staffing-issues\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/airlines\/2025\/11\/03\/love-field-flights-paused-due-to-staffing-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\">the FAA again issued a ground delay for both DFW and Love Field<\/a>, slowing flights bound for North Texas at their departure airports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The flight reduction is an unprecedented move at a time when the aviation industry is enduring the effects of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s unprecedented that we\u2019ve had such government impact on the safety margin going through the tunnel of air traffic controllers,\u201d Tajer said. \u201cWe are at a crossroads of the human event in this government shutdown. And while everyone has a political opinion and the political debate may be righteous for the issues that are at hand, it has no place on our airlines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, called on Congress to \u201cstop the cruel attacks on all Americans\u201d in a statement Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThe only way aviation keeps moving during a shutdown is because air traffic controllers and TSA officers come to work without getting paid, while everyone who supports their work for our safety and security is sent home without pay,\u201d Nelson said. \u201cCutting capacity is a regular tool used to keep aviation safe when increased risks are present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Airlines were scrambling to figure out where to cut, and travelers with plans for the weekend and beyond waited nervously to see if their flights would take off as scheduled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The other affected airports include busy connecting hubs and those in popular tourist destinations, including Atlanta, Denver, Orlando, Miami, and San Francisco. In some of the biggest cities \u2014 such as New York, Houston and Chicago \u2014 multiple airports will be affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The flight reductions, coming just weeks before the busy holiday season, have travelers already changing their plans or looking at other options.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Fallon Carter canceled her Friday flight from New York to Tampa, Fla., where she planned to spend the weekend at the beach. She was worried about making it back to Long Island, N.Y., for her best friend\u2019s wedding, where she\u2019ll be a bridesmaid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know, if I get there, will I get home?\u201d Carter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Grace Logeman, 40, of Delaware, drove two hours on Thursday to Newark, N.J., for a Frontier flight to Atlanta that was delayed by three hours. The delay caused her to miss a connecting flight to the Dominican Republic for her sister\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m devastated,\u201d Logeman said while on hold with the airline\u2019s customer service line. \u201cAs far as the ongoing shutdown, &#8230; it\u2019s hurting me.
