HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A driver was detained Thursday after running out of gas during a chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies, according to authorities.<\/p>\n
According to the Webster Police Department, the suspect was identified as 38-year-old Jasmere Washington.<\/p>\n
Webster PD detectives, along with officers from Galveston PD and Texas City PD, responded to a chase that began as a traffic stop at noon, according to law enforcement.<\/p>\n
Galveston PD said that the chase began on 73rd Street after officers attempted to stop Washington in a red Mitsubishi, who reportedly has multiple felony warrants. Police said that once the chase moved off the island, GPD units stopped following Washington, and DPS troopers took the lead.<\/p>\n
SkyEye was over the scene of the pursuit when the driver led authorities along the Gulf Freeway, weaving in and out of lanes before taking an exit and getting onto the South Loop.<\/p>\n
Video showed the moment the driver was boxed in along multiple lanes of the South Loop and Stella Link. The driver is then seen slowing down and coming to a full stop as multiple officers surround the vehicle. Webster police said the driver stopped after running out of gas.<\/p>\n
Washington got out of the vehicle and turned himself in to the authorities.<\/p>\n
Court records obtained by ABC13 show Washington has a warrant for not showing up to a court hearing in a June theft case in which it’s alleged he stole a pair of sneakers from a person that cost less than $100.<\/p>\n
Court records also show that Washington has a warrant from just a week and a half ago for another police chase. Court documents state that on Sept. 24th, a Webster police officer spotted him in the same red Mitsubishi he was driving on Thursday, ran his information and found out he had warrants in Harris and Brazoria County, and tried to pull him over, documents said. Court records say that the chase lasted eight miles and contained much of the same dangerous driving from Thursday. That chase was eventually terminated by the Webster PD officer.<\/p>\n
Washington is now in the custody of Galveston police, according to Webster police. Galveston police said he will add another charge to his lengthy record, which is a felony for evading arrest.<\/p>\n
