Goldman Sachs opened the gates to its upper ranks on Thursday, naming 638 new managing directors in one of Wall Street’s most anticipated promotion<\/a> rounds.<\/p>\n

The number represents a roughly 5% increase from the firm’s 2023 class of 608, at a time when dealmaking<\/a> was still recovering from the post-pandemic slump.<\/p>\n

This year’s cohort “have helped strengthen our core franchises, with a focus on serving our clients with excellence and operating at scale, while leading and developing strong teams globally,” Goldman CEO David Solomon<\/a> and President John Waldron wrote in a companywide memo viewed by Business Insider. “These decisions are extremely difficult, and this year was no exception,” the executives added.<\/p>\n

New managing director classes are selected every other year, alternating with the firm’s biennial partner promotions. The MD title is a career-defining milestone that sits one rung below partner \u2014 Goldman’s most powerful circle<\/a> outside the C-suite<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Existing partners and managing directors participated in more than 6,000 behind-the-scenes interviews to help determine who made the cut this year, Goldman Sachs said \u2014 a nod to the exhaustive nature of the bank’s “cross-ruffing” process<\/a> by which prospective MDs and partners are vetted by their peers.<\/p>\n

A breakdown of Goldman’s 2025 MD class<\/p>\n

The bank did not specify how many MDs sit in each division, but noted that more than 70% of this year’s class hail from revenue-generating franchises. That includes major business lines such as global banking and markets, as well as asset and wealth management, among others.<\/p>\n

That more than two-thirds of the MDs hail from money-making business lines makes sense. It’s been a strong year<\/a> for dealmaking and trading. In its most recent earnings report, Goldman said stalwart businesses like mergers advisory and equities trading were up, reflecting a healthier market than many anticipated this year.<\/p>\n

Out of the 638 new MDs, 27% were women, or 172. That’s fewer than 2023, when 186 women were promoted. The bank has faced criticism for not doing enough to advance the careers of women executives, and last week Solomon said the bank hasn’t made enough progress<\/a> in hiring women.<\/p>\n
