New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdanimade a triumphant trip to Puerto Rico on Thursday for an annual summit that brings New York politicians and lobbyists to sunny San Juan for strategy meetings, workshops and boozy confabs. <\/p>\n
Fresh off his election win, Mamdani was greeted by a cheering beachfront crowd at the Somos conference, where he promised them he would fight for working people. <\/p>\n
His Democratic ally, New York Attorney General Letitia James, exhorted the crowd to sing \u201cMamdani, whoa-oh-oh-oh\u201d along with her to the tune of old standard, \u201cVolare.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNew York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani flew to Puerto Rico for an annual conference of city political power players. It comes as he looks to fill jobs on his team and faces new scrutiny on how his administration will fight antisemitism.\u00a0NBC New York’s Melissa Russo reports.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n
The conference is something of a post-Election Day retreat for the state\u2019s political movers and shakers at a Hilton hotel in San Juan. This year, there are ballroom events billed as \u201cWorkforce Development Through Rising Communities\u201d and \u201cCelebrating Human Services Together,\u201d along with a series of legislative workshops. The whole affair is typically viewed as a chance to unwind, schmooze and party. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m happy to be here at Somos, and I\u2019m happy also to be here because … you cannot tell the story of New York City without telling the story of Puerto Rico,\u201d Mamdani said shortly after arriving.<\/p>\n
He added that he had already tried the traditional plantain dish, mofongo, and that \u201cit was great.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mamdani, 34, announced his transition team this week, hiring a group of veteran officials to help guide his shift to City Hall, as he plans to carry out an ambitious affordability agenda when he takes office next year. <\/p>\n
Before landing in Puerto Rico, Mamdani spoke by phone with the city\u2019s outgoing mayor, Eric Adams, who promised that his team \u201cwill fully cooperate with this transition,\u201d according to a spokesperson for Adams. Adams did not attend the annual summit.<\/p>\n
Mamdani is set to return to New York on Saturday. <\/p>\n
The trip comes days after he defeated former Gov.
