{"id":361459,"date":"2025-11-07T05:17:22","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T05:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/361459\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T05:17:22","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T05:17:22","slug":"group-protests-kmt-bill-to-end-pension-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/361459\/","title":{"rendered":"Group protests KMT bill to end pension reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"as boxTitle boxText\" data-desc=\"\u5206\u4eab\u5217\">\n<li>\n<p>By Lin Che-yuan &#13;<br \/>\nand Jason Pan  \/  &#13;<br \/>\nStaff reporters<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The push by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) to suspend pension reforms amounts to \u201crobbing the poor to give to the rich,\u201d resulting in wider income gaps, and injustice against farmers and laborers, the Economic Democracy Union (EDU) said.<\/p>\n<p>EDU members protested outside the legislature yesterday, a day after the bill to suspend pension reforms passed its first reading with backing from the Taiwan People\u2019s Party.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would roll back reforms to the pension system launched by the Democratic Progressive Party government in 2017, which was aimed at securing solvency for the state pension fund, as the previous pension scheme allowed civil servants, military personnel and teachers to \u201ccontribute little, retire early and receive generous benefits\u201d at the expense of other workers and farmers, the activist group said.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/P02-251107-011.jpg\" width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Photo: Tien Yu-hua, Taipei Times<\/p>\n<p>EDU researcher Huang Ting-wei (\u9ec3\u4ead\u5049) said that retired public school teachers receive an average monthly pension of NT$57,973, while civil servants get a monthly average of NT$50,395.<\/p>\n<p>The government defines the lowest standard of living expenses this year as requiring NT$20,379 per month in Taipei and NT$15,515 elsewhere, with incomes below these figures considered to be low-income households, Huang said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCivil servants and teachers \u2014 retired and not working \u2014 are getting more than NT$50,000 from their pensions, above the average salary, yet the pensioners claim to be poor and to have difficulty living, and so they fight pension reform,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaiwan\u2019s more than 500,000 farmers receive only a monthly average of NT$8,110 in retirement benefits,\u201d Huang added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 1.9 million working class retirees receive an average of NT$25,300 in retirement benefits.
