(Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1871:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chipublib.org\/mayor-joseph-medill-biography\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Medill<\/a>, Tribune editor and publisher who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/10\/01\/flashback-more-dead-than-alive-chicago-tribune-staffers-recount-how-they-labored-to-save-their-building-and-get-the-paper-out-during-the-great-chicago-fire\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kept the paper going<\/a> after the Great Chicago Fire \u2014 was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-the-election-overwhelmi\/184439703\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">elected mayor<\/a>. He represented the \u201cFireproof Party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>1934:<\/strong> Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-oscar-depriest-is-defeat\/184439829\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur W. (Carl Hugare\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979:<\/strong> Chicago Cubs reliever <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-bruce-sutter-wins-nation\/184441643\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bruce Sutter<\/a> won the National League\u2019s Cy Young Award. He was only the second Cubs pitcher to earn the honor at the time. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971:<\/strong> Rolf Betic, 19, Lake Forest, and his College of Lake County classmate Ralph Clousser, 19, Lake Bluff, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-victims-brother-roomma\/184243524\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confessed<\/a> and were charged in the strangling of Betic\u2019s half-sister, Gabriella, 11, in their family home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds and his wife Marisol were <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-reynolds-wife-indicted\/184440476\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indicted on fraud charges<\/a>, which alleged the couple illegally spent campaign funds and defrauded banks. Reynolds was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-former-us-rep-mel-rey\/152953229\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-former-us-rep-mel-rey\/152953229\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">convicted<\/a> on 15 of 16 fraud counts. President Bill Clinton\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-former-us-rep-mel-rey\/152953596\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-former-us-rep-mel-rey\/152953596\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">commuted<\/a>\u00a0Reynolds\u2019 fraud sentence in 2001, with two years remaining to be served. Following his release, Reynolds tried repeatedly to regain his congressional seat.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"6hkJ5A1rfT\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/the-dishonor-roll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Dishonor Roll: Meet the public officials who helped build Illinois\u2019 culture of corruption<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After a federal judge sentenced him to six months behind bars for failing to file tax returns in May 2018, Reynolds went to prison for the third time in his ill-fated career. (Chuck Berman\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2007:<\/strong> Former Illinois Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-george-ryan-rides-last\/164151669\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George Ryan entered prison<\/a> after an <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-george-ryan-guilty-chic\/164151570\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 2006 conviction<\/a> for fraud, racketeering and other charges, which was the culmination of the federal Operation Safe Road investigation that exposed rampant bribery in state driver\u2019s license facilities while he was secretary of state as well as misdeeds as governor.
