(The Communities Foundation of Texas is a supporter of The Dallas Morning News\u2019 Future of North Texas initiative.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Housing is problematic in North Texas because the region has failed to build homes fast enough to keep up with its rapid population growth, said Cullum Clark, director of the George W. And \u201c75% of single parents with kids are housing cost-burdened. They\u2019re making really difficult trade-offs \u2013 preventative health care appointments, nutritious food, educational experiences for their kids \u2013 simply to keep a roof over their heads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Wayne White, president and CEO of Communities Foundation of Texas, called housing one of society\u2019s most urgent challenges. Housing is the nonprofit\u2019s third strategic initiative, followed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/2025\/09\/19\/north-texas-giving-day-sets-record-with-nearly-75-million-for-local-nonprofits\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Texas Giving Day<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2024\/01\/17\/a-winning-formula-to-keep-a-strong-texas-economy\/#:~:text=As%20Texas%20continues%20to%20grow,Latino%20and%20economically%20underrepresented%20students.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Educate Texas<\/a> initiatives. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Communities Foundation aims to advance housing policy, production and preservation through the initiative, White said. To help do this, the foundation launched HouseDTX, a network of funders, advocates, planners and community leaders to help elevate housing solutions, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The foundation also plans to collaborate, convene and co-invest in stakeholders involved in housing in the region, White said. The foundation hopes additional companies and community leaders will come forward to help match the foundation\u2019s investment, which will create a $100 million Housing Impact Fund, White said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cA home is more than a shelter,\u201d White said. \u201cIt\u2019s a foundation for hope, it\u2019s a foundation for family, [and] it\u2019s a foundation for a thriving community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Housing goals<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:4000 \/ 2668\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2668\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/O2MY2DPWCFGYLG7HX4UAVN2RYI.jpg\" alt=\"Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert, right, laughs with Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Gay...\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert, right, laughs with Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Gay Donnell Willis during a Communities Foundation Texas event announcing further investments in housing, in alignment with its focus on health, wealth, living, and learning, on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025, in Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>Angela Piazza \/ Staff Photographer<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The new initiative fits well within the city of Dallas\u2019 broader housing goal, which involves developing and preserving over 7,000 rentals and 3,500 homeownership units annually, said Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Meeting those goals will require public-private partnerships, Tolbert said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Communities Foundation plans to coordinate and align efforts among the different segments of the housing market to address the fragmentation of the issue, said Nadine Dechausay, Communities Foundation\u2019s chief strategy and insights officer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Through HouseDTX, Communities Foundation plans to launch three working groups in its first year, Dechausay said. Communities Foundation has already created a $5 million loan and grant fund for early investments into the initiative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">For instance, Communities Foundation awarded a $250,000 grant to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcworkshop.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">buildingcommunityWORKSHOP<\/a>, also called bcWORKSHOP, which performs modular construction to reduce costs and build homes faster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Benje Feehan, bcWORKSHOP\u2019s executive director, told The News the Communities Foundation is doing great work by pulling together everyone involved in the housing production process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no silver bullet, because it\u2019s not a singular problem,\u201d Feehan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">This reporting is part of the Future of North Texas, a community-funded journalism initiative supported by the Commit Partnership, Communities Foundation of Texas, The Dallas Foundation, the Dallas Mavericks, the Dallas Regional Chamber, Deedie Rose, Lisa and Charles Siegel, the McCune-Losinger Family Fund, The Meadows Foundation, the Perot Foundation, the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and the University of Texas at Dallas.
