The billionaire novelist, philanthropist, and ex-wife to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Amazon<\/a> founder Jeff Bezos has <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/10\/billionaire-mackenzie-scott-doubles-down-on-dei-with-42-million-donation\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/10\/billionaire-mackenzie-scott-doubles-down-on-dei-with-42-million-donation\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">donated<\/a> hundreds of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/15\/philianthropist-billionaire-mackenzie-scott-cuts-amazon-stake-half-worth-nearly-13-billion-the-billionaire-casually-donated-over-110-million-to-dei-causes\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/15\/philianthropist-billionaire-mackenzie-scott-cuts-amazon-stake-half-worth-nearly-13-billion-the-billionaire-casually-donated-over-110-million-to-dei-causes\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">millions of dollars<\/a> just in the past few months\u2014but since 2020, she\u2019s donated an eye-popping $19.25 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Scott came to much of her fortune through her connection to Bezos. (They divorced in 2019.) During her marriage, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/MacKenzie-Scott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/MacKenzie-Scott\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">played a key role<\/a> in Amazon\u2019s founding and early operations, including helping with business plans and contracts. Upon their divorce, she <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2019\/04\/04\/mackenzie-bezos-richest-woman-divorce\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2019\/04\/04\/mackenzie-bezos-richest-woman-divorce\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">received roughly a 4%<\/a> stake in Amazon, which amounted to roughly 139 million shares at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since then, she\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/15\/philianthropist-billionaire-mackenzie-scott-cuts-amazon-stake-half-worth-nearly-13-billion-the-billionaire-casually-donated-over-110-million-to-dei-causes\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/15\/philianthropist-billionaire-mackenzie-scott-cuts-amazon-stake-half-worth-nearly-13-billion-the-billionaire-casually-donated-over-110-million-to-dei-causes\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reduced her stake by about 42%<\/a>, selling or donating about 58 million shares, worth around $12.6 billion as of late 2025. She\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/mackenzie-scott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/mackenzie-scott\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">still worth more than $35 billion<\/a> today, despite having donated $19.25 billion through her philanthropic platform <a href=\"https:\/\/yieldgiving.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/yieldgiving.com\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Yield Giving<\/a>, which she founded in 2022. The organization has donated to thousands of organizations, focused on issues including DEI, education, disaster recovery, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Although Scott continues offloading Amazon shares, her wealth continues to grow. Year-to-date, she\u2019s added $923 million to her net worth, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/mackenzie-s-tuttle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/mackenzie-s-tuttle\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Bloomberg Billionaires Index<\/a>. Since November 2020, Amazon share prices have jumped more than 45%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Bezos made the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/01\/04\/jeff-bezos-largest-charitable-donation-2020-10-billion-climate-change\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/01\/04\/jeff-bezos-largest-charitable-donation-2020-10-billion-climate-change\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">largest charitable donation of the year<\/a>, a $10 billion gift to launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Bezos Earth Fund<\/a>, aimed at addressing climate change. He\u2019s also donated about $790 million to various environmental groups through the fund, $110 million through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosdayonefund.org\/day1familiesfund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bezosdayonefund.org\/day1familiesfund\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Day 1 Families Fund<\/a> to support homeless families and $120 million to his tuition-free preschool network, <a href=\"https:\/\/bezosacademy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/bezosacademy.org\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Bezos Academy<\/a>. Also, in 2024, he completed a $200 million pledge to Smithsonian for renovations and a new learning center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbeswealthteam\/2025\/02\/03\/americas-most-generous-philanthropists-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbeswealthteam\/2025\/02\/03\/americas-most-generous-philanthropists-2025\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">lifetime giving amounts to just $4.1 billion<\/a>, according to Forbes\u2019 America\u2019s Most Generous Philanthropists 2025 list published in April. Considering the man is <a href=\"http:\/\/bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/jeffrey-p-bezos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to http:\/\/bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/jeffrey-p-bezos\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">worth $264 billion<\/a>, that\u2019s just 1.6% of his net worth, whereas Scott has given 36% of her net worth, according to Forbes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, Forbes counts \u201clifetime giving\u201d as money that has already been donated, and not funds that are just parked in a foundation for now. The list showed Scott is the fifth-most generous philanthropist, behind Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, George Soros, and Michael Bloomberg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MacKenzie Scott\u2019s major gifts this year<\/p>\n<p>In a matter of months, Scott donated hundreds of millions of dollars to organizations focused on DEI, education, and disaster recovery. Just a sample of her largest recent gifts include:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MacKenzie Scott\u2019s giving style<\/p>\n<p>Scott\u2019s philanthropic style is considered unique because she makes gifts unrestricted, meaning the organizations can choose how to use the donations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike traditional funding processes that often involve lengthy applications, specific restrictions, and reporting requirements, her style empowers organizations like ours to determine how best to direct funds quickly and innovatively to address pressing issues,\u201d Noni Ramos, CEO of Housing Trust Silicon Valley, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/12\/20\/mackenzie-scott-donations-surprise-gifts-philanthropy-2024\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/12\/20\/mackenzie-scott-donations-surprise-gifts-philanthropy-2024\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told<\/a> Fortune in late 2024, when her organization received a $30 million gift from Scott.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scott has also been particularly focused on DEI, education, and disaster relief recently, three areas where the Trump administration has made major cuts. This could suggest Scott\u2019s philanthropy is trying to fill the void from the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She stands behind the idea Americans should \u201crecognize and celebrate our role as active participants in the co-creation of our communities,\u201d Scott wrote in an Oct. 15 <a href=\"https:\/\/yieldgiving.com\/essays\/we-are-the-ones-we-ve-been-waiting-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/yieldgiving.com\/essays\/we-are-the-ones-we-ve-been-waiting-for\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">post<\/a> on her Yield Giving site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe potential of peaceful, non-transactional contribution has long been underestimated, often on the basis that it is not financially self-sustaining, or that some of its benefits are hard to track,\u201d she wrote.
