{"id":363802,"date":"2025-11-08T05:11:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T05:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/363802\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T05:11:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T05:11:19","slug":"feds-move-to-subpoena-former-cia-director-and-others-who-investigated-russian-interference-in-trumps-2016-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/363802\/","title":{"rendered":"Feds move to subpoena former CIA director and others who investigated Russian interference in Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhph94k600003b6nhqxevmp9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prosecutors in Florida moved to issue subpoenas to former CIA Director John Brennan and other former officials as the Justice Department investigates the federal government\u2019s counterintelligence investigation into Donald Trump\u2019s first presidential campaign and its contacts with Russians, sources told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhpi3yke000q3b6nm63vqr9p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The subpoenas are likely to fuel right-wing clamoring to investigate the investigators again \u2014 after special counsel John Durham and the Justice inspector general previously probed the FBI\u2019s work on the 2016 investigation known as \u201cCrossfire Hurricane.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhpi3yke000r3b6n5si6knyc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Subpoenas were scheduled to be sent to several people at intelligence agencies including the FBI and CIA who had worked on an Intelligence Community Assessment in 2017 that summarized counterintelligence on Russian attempts to interfere in the presidential election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhpi3yke000s3b6n0nolvu21@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were among those who received subpoenas, sources said, as well as former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhpi3yke000t3b6ng9d50z0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new investigative demands, from the US Attorney\u2019s Office in the Southern District of Florida, seek documents from July 2016 through February 2017.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhpjo4or000b3b5ydfoy5mhh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The subpoenas ask for digital and paper records that would capture any communications around the work done by intelligence officials at the time, including their text messages, emails and computer files, sources told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhpi3yke000u3b6nlhqn5bi3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The possible targets of the investigation aren\u2019t clear from the subpoenas themselves, nor are the possible theories of criminal law Trump administration prosecutors may want to examine with a grand jury almost a decade after the records were created.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhpi7drm00003b5y4rq6byci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has requested comment from Brennan\u2019s lawyer, as well as lawyers for Strzok and Page.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhpjfavy00083b5yvja07a2y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The scope of the new probe is unclear. Actions by investigators in the 2016-2019 Trump-Russia probe would be long past the 5-year statute of limitations generally for federal crimes. However, Trump allies have argued that the current Justice Department can revisit the earlier matters as part of a broad conspiracy that has targeted Trump stretching from the Russian meddling probe to the investigation into Trump\u2019s role in the January 6 riot and his efforts to remain in office despite losing the 2020 election, as well as the probe into classified documents he kept at his Mar-a-Lago club.
