Police say a one-year-old girl who died after she was struck by a freight train on the New South Wales north-western slopes, had been playing with other children at the time.<\/p>\n
Emergency services were called to Baranbah Street in Baan Baa, near Narrabri, at about 7:50pm on Friday after receiving reports a child had been hit by a freight train.<\/p>\n
The one-year-old girl was treated by paramedics for serious injuries before being taken to Narrabri Hospital where she later died.<\/p>\n
Oxley Police District Superintendent David Cooper said investigations were continuing into the circumstances of the incident, describing it as “an absolute tragedy”.<\/p>\n

“We can establish at this stage that the child was with a number of other children, but those circumstances are still under investigation,” he said.<\/p>\n
“The parents were not in the immediate vicinity, but we are aware of where the parents were, and the supervision of the child is not in doubt.<\/p>\n
“Our understanding is that the child was just playing, this is a really tragic case of a child that had gone to play in a bad location.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Superintendent Cooper said the child, who was from the area, was struck by an unladen freight train and as it approached, railway crossing boom gates and lights did activate.<\/p>\n

He said the train tracks ran through the village and a number of people witnessed the incident mainly from a commercial premises.<\/p>\n
“I want to highlight that this is nothing but an absolute tragedy and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family,” he said.<\/p>\n
“This will have a broad impact on the community, and we want to make sure everybody gets the support they need.<\/p>\n
“I can only imagine the horror and grief that they [the family] are in at the moment.”<\/p>\n
The train driver, a 22-year-old man, was not hurt but was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.<\/p>\n

Superintendent Cooper said the driver was unaware the incident had occurred, until he was notified a short time later and stopped the train.<\/p>\n
“There is no suggestion at all that the train diver had any negligence, and I feel for that young man as well,” Superintendent Cooper said.<\/p>\n
“The small community of Baan Baa and the emergency personnel that attended we are going to be wrapping our support around those people, the family.”<\/p>\n

The farming town of Baan Baa has a population of about 170 people.<\/p>\n

“Our hearts go out, obviously, to the family of the little girl tragically lost \u2026 it’s a devastating event and really deeply affected our close-knit community of Baan Baa,” he said.<\/p>\n
“They’re a young family that’s moved into the area, is my belief, and it’s just tragic.”<\/p>\n
Cr Tiemens said it would take time for the community to recover.<\/p>\n
“If this happened in a suburb of Sydney it would be tough, but when it happens in a tiny village where everyone knows everyone, it’s really hard to take,” he said.<\/p>\n
