Tower says expenses are increasing and they need to streamline services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t see this coming,&#8221; says Lori Domin, President of Pottstown Nurses United. &#8220;We&#8217;re still trying to process this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was a sudden blow to 350 employees in the Tower Health Network after hundreds of layoffs were announced Friday; more than 130 of them are happening at Pottstown Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>             <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfmz.com\/news\/area\/berks\/tower-health-to-lay-off-350-workers-including-131-at-pottstown-hospital\/article_d6f61a86-281a-45a2-abf2-b8b52873f4e8.html\" class=\"tnt-asset-link\" aria-label=\"Tower Health to lay off 350 workers, including 131 at Pottstown Hospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>            Tower Health to lay off 350 workers, including 131 at Pottstown Hospital<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re actually going to be closing several departments,&#8221; says Domin. &#8220;They&#8217;re going to be closing our intensive care, our cancer infusion center, outpatient endoscopy suite, they&#8217;re going to remove the &#8216;float pool&#8217; nurses, and also close the second floor med surge step down unit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Renita Robinson was a nurse at Pottstown hospital who was let go in this round of layoffs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m just still in shock trying to process everything that&#8217;s happening,&#8221; says Robinson. &#8220;It&#8217;s just hard right now for me to figure out what is the next plan without even knowing anything by management.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An Internal Communication to employees from Tower Health President &amp; CEO Michael Stern, pointed to increasing financial pressures and uncertainty of health care systems nationwide as part of the reason for the cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Domin says they just finished contract negotiations in August.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They really fought us on the layoff language, which we kept asking them are you going to be laying people off and they were like &#8216;no, no, no we&#8217;re not doing that,'&#8221; says Domin. &#8220;Then here we are 2-3 months later and that&#8217;s what they&#8217;re doing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The nurses says these cuts will create transportation challenges for patients and detract from care.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where are these patients going to go,&#8221; says Robinson. &#8220;It&#8217;s quite a distance to go to Reading Hospital, and these are older citizens of the community at Pottstown Hospital that rely heavily on Pottstown Hospital for treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A Tower Health Spokesperson said the large number of cuts at Pottstown Hospital came because the number of patients being seen there is well below capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Pottstown Nurses United tells WFMZ they plan to meet next week with members to discuss how to move forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"POTTSTOWN, Pa.- Major cuts were announced at Tower Health on Friday and hundreds are now out of a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":365906,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[8378,38133,210,1141,1142,67,132,68],"class_list":{"0":"post-365905","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-health-care","8":"tag-_homepage_top_stories","9":"tag-berks","10":"tag-health","11":"tag-health-care","12":"tag-healthcare","13":"tag-united-states","14":"tag-unitedstates","15":"tag-us"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115517467211214938","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/365905","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=365905"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/365905\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/365906"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=365905"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=365905"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=365905"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
