{"id":366393,"date":"2025-11-09T07:46:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T07:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/366393\/"},"modified":"2025-11-09T07:46:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T07:46:11","slug":"victoria-police-re-enact-single-gunshot-heard-hour-after-dezi-freeman-fled-into-porepunkah-bushland-porepunkah-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/366393\/","title":{"rendered":"Victoria police re-enact single gunshot heard hour after Dezi Freeman fled into Porepunkah bushland | Porepunkah shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A reported single gunshot has sparked a fresh line of inquiry in the long-running manhunt for alleged police killer Desmond \u201cDezi\u201d Freeman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Victoria police conducted \u201cfirearms testing\u201d near Barrett Lane and Rayner Track in Porepunkah, about 210km north-east of Melbourne, on Wednesday as part of their search.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The testing was triggered by reports of a gunshot in the vicinity at about 11.45am on 26 August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Freeman had allegedly opened fire on police an hour earlier, killing Det Sen Const Neal Thompson and Sen Const Vadim de Waart-Hottart and wounding a third officer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They were among 10 officers serving a warrant at Freeman\u2019s Porepunkah home when they were confronted at about 10.30am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe area has since been searched by police, however no trace of Freeman was located,\u201d Victoria police said in a statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cInvestigators are hopeful that the firearms testing may assist police with the ongoing search.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Police want to speak to anyone who may have heard the gunshot, including any members of the public who may have been in the area at the time and believe they could be the person responsible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There have been no confirmed sightings of Freeman since he fled into dense bushland despite detectives investigating more than 1,700 tipoffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hundreds of officers and specialist resources, including interstate and international crews, have scoured the area and surrounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The search was scaled back to more than 200 police in September and Mount Buffalo national park reopened to the public in late October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The police chief commissioner, Mike Bush, has previously said police were examining several possible scenarios.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIs he still alive? We don\u2019t know. Is he alive and still in the area? We have no real information to suggest that,\u201d Bush told reporters in mid-October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOr has he been unable to leave the area and is being looked after by others? We don\u2019t know.
