Sometimes a jeans ad is just that"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve gotten so used to celebrities using their platform to scold us on their political views \u2013 almost always Democratic talking points \u2013 that it&#8217;s surprising when an actress like Sweeney holds back.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/85512461007-getty-images-2228080229.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Trump supports Sydney Sweeney amid ad controversy<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump praises Sydney Sweeney and her American Eagle ad after hearing she&#8217;s a Republican.<\/p>\n<p>Unless you were living on a deserted island this summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2025\/07\/30\/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-good-jeans-ad-controversy\/85420210007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2025\/07\/30\/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-good-jeans-ad-controversy\/85420210007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chances are you heard about Sydney Sweeney\u2019s jeans<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And her genes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When American Eagle in July launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2DNyA-6X0cI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a sexy, playful ad campaign<\/a> featuring the actress, who makes a tongue-in-cheek reference to her \u201cgenes,\u201d progressives couldn\u2019t handle it.<\/p>\n<p>They still can&#8217;t. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/sydney-sweeney-gq-cover-story-interview-men-of-the-year-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profile of Sweeney in GQ<\/a>, in which she does mention the \u201cjeans\u201d incident, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2025\/11\/05\/sydney-sweeney-ad-american-eagle-jeans-break-silence\/87102360007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2025\/11\/05\/sydney-sweeney-ad-american-eagle-jeans-break-silence\/87102360007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has brought up the faux-controversy once again<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/life\/2025\/07\/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-ad-jeans-controversy-eugenics-soap.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/life\/2025\/07\/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-ad-jeans-controversy-eugenics-soap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sweeney says in one of the ads<\/a>. \u201cMy jeans are blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since Sweeney, 28, has blond hair and blue eyes, the liberals brought out their pitchforks, claiming that the ads \u2013 and Sweeney \u2013 were obviously pro-\u201cNazi\u201d and smacked of \u201cWhite supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It all really was quite silly, and the manufactured uproar didn\u2019t seem to faze Sweeney or American Eagle one bit. They kept running the ads, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/american-eagle-rides-high-sydney-sweeney-ad-buzz-2025-09-04\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/american-eagle-rides-high-sydney-sweeney-ad-buzz-2025-09-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">company saw a significant boost<\/a> as a result. Sweeney kept above the fray, not giving her detractors the satisfaction of any kind of response.\u00a0Until now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Previously: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2025\/07\/30\/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-good-jeans-ad-controversy\/85420210007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney Sweeney&#8217;s jeans ad triggers liberals. She looks good. They don&#8217;t. | Opinion<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The GQ profile has reignited the same progressives in the media and beyond that are still wringing their hands, while Sweeney keeps playing it cool.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not everything has to be about politics. How refreshing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney\u2019s jeans ads became such a political and cultural flashpoint this summer that both President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" data-autotag=\"26f031d1-9924-4f10-b4e6-019d076113d5\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> and Vice President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/jd-vance\/\" data-autotag=\"6b71af8d-ad9a-443f-8e59-85794a07967e\" rel=\"noopener\">JD Vance<\/a> weighed in with support for the actress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114970952739677687\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114970952739677687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump called the ad<\/a> the \u201cHOTTEST\u201d out there and said, \u201cGo get \u2018em Sydney!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of the firestorm, there was also breathless attention to Sweeney\u2019s political affiliation, which she has been very private about. Some discovered that \u2013 horror of horrors \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/is-sydney-sweeney-registered-republican.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/is-sydney-sweeney-registered-republican.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she was a registered Republican in Florida<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Opinion: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2025\/11\/03\/aoc-riley-gaines-don-lemon-megyn-kelly-trans-insult\/86963611007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Progressives like AOC hate conservative women. Mocking them is not a good look.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In her GQ interview, the actress admits that getting the White House\u2019s attention was \u201csurreal,\u201d but that\u2019s about as into politics as she got.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did a jean ad,\u201d Sweeney says. \u201cI mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I\u2019m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney also says she \u201cknew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans,\u201d so the uproar \u201cdidn\u2019t affect me one way or the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How refreshing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s less inspiring is the reaction from those who wanted Sweeney to grovel for forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:.5em;border:2px solid #4f4bb6;margin:0 auto\"><b>Opinion alerts:<\/b> Get columns from your favorite columnists + expert analysis on top issues, delivered straight to your device through the USA TODAY app. Don&#8217;t have the app? <a href=\"https:\/\/static.usatoday.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Download it for free from your app store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At one point in the profile, and the most she talks about the \u201ccontroversy,\u201d Sweeney discusses her frustration that some people outright lied that American Eagle wasn\u2019t seeing a boon from the ad campaign.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, so Sweeney might not have much to say about the optics of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman being the face of a campaign about \u2018good jeans\/genes,\u2019 but don\u2019t get her started about the company\u2019s stock-market performance,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/sydney-sweeney-addressed-american-eagle-controversy.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/sydney-sweeney-addressed-american-eagle-controversy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writer for The Cut sarcastically surmises<\/a>. \u201cSounds like she\u2019s given this a lot of thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Can we move on from celebrities&#8217; preaching? There&#8217;s hope.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve gotten so used to celebrities <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-hollywood-fundraiser-clooney-roberts-ukraine-summit-40081471c93faa68de5c4aa30455303b\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-hollywood-fundraiser-clooney-roberts-ukraine-summit-40081471c93faa68de5c4aa30455303b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using their platform to scold us on their political views<\/a> \u2013 which are almost always Democratic talking points \u2013 that it\u2019s surprising when an actress like Sweeney holds back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always believed that I\u2019m not here to tell people what to think,\u201d Sweeney says in GQ. \u201cI\u2019m just here to kind of open their eyes to different ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the Trump era, it seems even more Hollywood stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2024\/05\/29\/trump-trial-robert-de-niro-speech-biden\/73892131007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2024\/05\/29\/trump-trial-robert-de-niro-speech-biden\/73892131007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have felt compelled to share their partisan leanings<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/celebrities-call-out-trump-deportations-ice-raids-protests-1235366585\/mark-ruffalo-4-1235366602\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/celebrities-call-out-trump-deportations-ice-raids-protests-1235366585\/mark-ruffalo-4-1235366602\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">examples are numerous<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps there is a pulling back, however. In addition to Sweeney, I\u2019ve seen some other hopeful signs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Opinion: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2025\/10\/16\/keira-knightley-jk-rowling-trans-boycott-harry-potter\/86674281007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kudos to Keira Knightley for not buckling to the left&#8217;s J.K. Rowling boycott<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The New York Times recently tried to get actress Jennifer Lawrence, 35, to talk politics and Trump, but she said she didn\u2019t want to add to political divisiveness. She was more open about criticizing the president during his first term. That\u2019s changed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t really know if I should,\u201d Lawrence told The Times. \u201cAs we\u2019ve learned, election after election, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for. So then what am I doing (when speaking out against Trump)? I\u2019m just sharing my opinion on something that\u2019s going to add fuel to a fire that\u2019s ripping the country apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Sweeney and Lawrence can start a trend where the Hollywood elite focus more on their craft and less on grandstanding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And I hope Sweeney keeps wearing those great jeans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ingrid Jacques is a columnist at USA TODAY.
