Further details about what happened weren\u2019t immediately released.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cLaw enforcement officers put themselves in harm\u2019s way to keep us safe, and we are forever grateful for officer Smith\u2019s sacrifice,\u201d North Carolina governor Josh Stein <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NC_Governor\/status\/1987238410160083379?s=20\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> in a statement on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Garner is a city of about 31,000 people just south of Raleigh in central <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/northcarolina\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina<\/a>.
