Currently in the spotlight: the year\u2019s best documentaries, care of this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/awards\/results\/2025-critics-choice-documentary-awards-nominations-orwell-1235155687\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Critics Choice Documentary Awards<\/a>, which took place on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at The Edison Ballroom in Manhattan. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/the-perfect-neighbor-review-documentary-stand-your-ground-laws-1235087856\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geeta Gandbhir\u2019s lauded feature \u201cThe Perfect Neighbor\u201d<\/a> was the evening\u2019s big winner, walking away with not just a Best Documentary Feature win and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/awards\/consider-this\/the-perfect-neighbor-documentary-oscar-interview-1235156101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Best Director win for Gandbhir<\/a>, but also Best Editing for Viridiana Lieberman, Best Archival Documentary, and Best True Crime Documentary.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by award-winning actor, writer, and producer Aasif Mandvi, the annual event hosted a variety of leading filmmakers, industry professionals, and special guests for an evening celebrating excellence in documentary filmmaking.\u00a0Other big winners included \u201cMr. Scorsese,\u201d \u201cOcean with David Attenborough,\u201d and\u00a0\u201cOrwell: 2+2=5,\u201d which each won two awards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/best-of\/savageland-mandatory-viewing-ice-agents-1235157584\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-card-index=\"0\" data-post-id=\"1235157584\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762761311_283_Screenshot-2025-11-07-at-11.02.18-AM-1.png\" alt=\"'Savageland' (2015)\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235159360\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/little-amelie-or-the-character-of-rain-directors-interview-1235157831\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-card-index=\"1\" data-post-id=\"1235157831\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762761312_924_littleamelie1.png\" alt=\"&quot;Little Am&#xE9;lie or the Character of Rain&quot;\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235157886\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The evening also honored legendary documentarian Ken Burns, who received the Critics Choice Impact Award, which was presented by acclaimed actor Christine Baranski; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/folktales-review-heidi-ewing-rachel-grady-1235085574\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visionary \u201cFolktales\u201d filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady<\/a>, who received the CCA\u2019s Pennebaker Award (formerly the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award), presented to them by Pennebaker\u2019s widow and collaborator, Chris Hegedus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen years in, and the art of documentary storytelling has never been more vital or vibrant,\u201d said\u00a0Christopher Campbell, Vice President of Documentary at the Critics Choice Association in an official statement. \u201cThis year\u2019s filmmakers show, through their creativity and courage, just how powerful documentaries can be in shaping our view of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/critics-choice-documentary-awards-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_critics-choice-documentary-awards-2\" data-tag=\"critics-choice-documentary-awards-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Critics Choice Documentary Awards<\/a> honors the year\u2019s finest achievements in documentaries released in theaters, on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TV<\/a>, and on major digital platforms, as determined by the voting of qualified CCA members (at IndieWire, that includes yours truly, David Ehrlich, Anne Thompson, and Marcus Jones). Nominations were determined by the voting of qualified CCA members with expertise in the documentary field.
