Each weekday, catch up on the 5 most pressing stories to start your morning in 3 minutes or less.  <\/p>\n<p>More than two decades after planning for the transformation of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art began \u2014 including more than a decade of work with architect Peter Zumthor and five years of construction \u2014 the new LACMA building is finally open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Well, sort of.<\/p>\n<p>For a limited time (<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/membership.lacma.org\/becomeamember?source_no=164721\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">July 3-7<\/a>), members of LACMA and local kids (<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lacma.org\/event\/nexgenla-sneak-peek-david-geffen-galleries\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">on July 6)<\/a> can get previews of the building \u2014 officially called the David Geffen Galleries \u2014 before the art is installed and the full museum opening, scheduled for April 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The previews of the new concrete and glass building straddling Wilshire Boulevard <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/view.connect.scpr.org\/?qs=d2b2f86c5af14f9397be14ccd2ef66b4a42e87be3ad24e158cf55fa7517a984a9136531892b3e0904ba23c3cbe041b7f798ef162725d10729f32dc8e30908a0b0a45e6e4beef0202a3e121c713b51ea1\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">kicked off in style last week<\/a> with three nights of performances featuring composer, bandleader and saxophonist Kamasi Washington presenting his six-movement suite Harmony of Difference, with the help of more than 100 musicians.<\/p>\n<p>The building has faced a fair share of criticisms \u2014 from <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2025\/jun\/28\/lacma-new-art-gallery-tour\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the cost<\/a>, to the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2025-06-27\/new-lacma-david-geffen-galleries-building-review\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">choice of construction materials<\/a>, to the look of the design. It has kind of that Jetsons feel to it, you know? This new sweeping look of the gallery going across Wilshire. I think it&#8217;s got a real nice aesthetic to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holly was pleased that the new building seemed to complement LACMA\u2019s <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.laconservancy.org\/learn\/historic-places\/pavilion-for-japanese-art-lacma\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pavilion for Japanese Art<\/a>: \u201c\u200aI think this has a similar aesthetic. It&#8217;s very low and curved and a lot of glass. I think it&#8217;s fabulous, so we&#8217;re excited to go inside. It looks like this cool concrete creature that holds art.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She added that on its own, &#8220;it&#8217;s really, really cool, but together with the other buildings in Museum Row, it is much more iconic as this collective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the criticisms of the design?<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aIt&#8217;s easy when there&#8217;s any sort of new building or public art, people like to kind of pick it apart and then years later they are totally fine with it and love it,&#8221; Buckley said. &#8220;You know, the Eiffel Tower was <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/daily.jstor.org\/the-artists-who-hated-the-eiffel-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">this horrible, ugly thing<\/a> when it was put in, and now it&#8217;s one of the most beautiful things in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A bunker look,\u2019 (but also) \u2018It\u2019s great\u2019<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"A man with gray hair, a plaid shirt and sunglasses next to a woman with black hair wearing sunglasses and a printed button down in front of temporary fences in front of the concrete and glass LACMA building.
