{"id":369123,"date":"2025-11-10T12:11:22","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T12:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/369123\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T12:11:22","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T12:11:22","slug":"bbc-bosses-resign-amid-fury-over-trump-documentary-edit-dw-11-09-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/369123\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC bosses resign amid fury over Trump documentary edit \u2013 DW \u2013 11\/09\/2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BBC Director General Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness resigned on Sunday after criticism of the way the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/united-kingdom\/t-60783992\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Kingdom&#8217;s<\/a> public broadcaster\u00a0edited a speech by US\u00a0President <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-president-donald-trump-russia-ukraine-israel-gaza-tariffs-trade-war\/t-19434433\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The scandal is the latest to hit the BBC, which has also been accused of failing to maintain its political neutrality in its reporting of the Israel-Hamas war.<\/p>\n<p>Other\u00a0recent controversies include <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ex-bbc-host-gets-suspended-sentence-for-indecent-images\/a-70229058\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">child abuse<\/a> scandals and allegations of bullying and sexual assault against high-profile presenters.<\/p>\n<p>What do we know about the resignations?<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, BBC chief Davie acknowledged that &#8220;the BBC is not perfect and we must always be open, transparent and accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While not being the only reason, the current debate around BBC News\u00a0has understandably contributed to my decision&#8230; I have to take ultimate responsibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Davie insisted the resignation was &#8220;entirely my decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a note to staff, he said that he was &#8220;working through exact timings with the Board to\u00a0allow for an orderly transition to a successor over the coming\u00a0months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>BBC News CEO Turness, meanwhile,\u00a0said questions over the Trump documentary have &#8220;reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC, an institution that I love.\u00a0As the CEO of BBC\u00a0News and Current Affairs,\u00a0the buck stops with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While mistakes\u00a0have been made, I want to be absolutely clear recent allegations that BBC\u00a0News is institutionally biased are wrong,&#8221; she wrote in a letter to staff.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters news agency cited a\u00a0person familiar with the situation as saying that the BBC board was\u00a0stunned at Davie&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Trump gave his reaction to the resignations, lauding\u00a0the exposure of &#8220;corrupt journalists,&#8221; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>Before joining the BBC, Deborah Turness was the first woman to lead a US network news divisionImage: Leon Neal\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>What was wrong with the Trump documentary?<\/p>\n<p>Pressure on the broadcaster&#8217;s top executives has been growing since\u00a0the Daily Telegraph newspaper published parts of a dossier by a BBC advisor on\u00a0standards and guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>The dossier criticized the way Trump&#8217;s <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/trump-looks-to-oust-january-6-investigators\/a-71479763\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">January 6, 2021<\/a>,\u00a0speech was edited for a BBC documentary, arguing it\u00a0was misleading as it removed\u00a0a section where Trump said\u00a0he wanted supporters to demonstrate peacefully.<\/p>\n<p>The memo suggested the flagship Panorama program\u00a0had\u00a0edited two parts of Trump&#8217;s speech together so he appeared to\u00a0encourage the Capitol Hill riots.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary showed Trump telling\u00a0supporters that &#8220;we&#8217;re going to walk down to the Capitol&#8221;
