Trey Martinez Fischer eyes District Attorney race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer (D-San Antonio) is considering running for Bexar County District Attorney instead of reelection in 2026. <\/p>\n<p>The race is wide open after <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-joe-gonzales-wont-seek-reelection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">District Attorney Joe Gonzales<\/a>, a Democrat, announced in June that he would not seek a third term. <\/p>\n<p>Luz Elena Chapa, who <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-fourth-court-of-appeals-election-results-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost her Fourth Court of Appeals seat<\/a> to Republican Lori Massey Brissette in last November, is also considering the race and expected to make a decision this week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/TMF-DA-explore-w_Letterhead.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Martinez Fischer said in a statement<\/a> Saturday that he was \u201cconcerned about the void being left\u201d in a critical role, and launching an exploratory committee before deciding whether to run.<\/p>\n<p>Filing for the March primary opened Saturday and closes Dec. 9. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand the role the District Attorney plays in protecting our community from<br \/>violent offenders and dispensing compassionate justice to those deserving a second<br \/>chance,\u201d Martinez Fischer said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the coming days, I will seek counsel from our legal community, examine the agency operations of the District Attorney\u2019s office, and consult with county leaders on how best to implement any necessary financial and structural changes to strengthen this office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez Fischer represents <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/116\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Antonio\u2019s Northwest side<\/a> in the Texas Legislature, where he\u2019s served for more than two decades. <\/p>\n<p>Texas Democrats have seen their limited influence at the state capitol reduced even further in recent years, and Martinez Fischer was <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/democrats-replace-trey-martinez-fischer-as-caucus-chair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">replaced in his post<\/a> as House Democratic Caucus chair before the last legislative session.<\/p>\n<p>Jumping over to the DA race would likely set up a crowded race to replace him <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/116\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas House District 116<\/a> \u2014 considered deeply blue territory.<\/p>\n<p>Other Democrats campaigning for the District Attorney opening include prosecutors Oscar Salinas and Angelica Carri\u00f3n Powers and criminal defense attorney Veronica Legarreta.<\/p>\n<p>District Court Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/judge-ron-rangel-wont-run-for-bexar-county-district-attorney-after-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ron Rangel launched<\/a> an exploratory committee but took his name out of contention. <\/p>\n<p>On the Republican side, former Assistant District Attorney Ashley Foster launched a campaign last week. <\/p>\n<p>Past DA races have been expensive affairs. Gonzales <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/district-attorney-bexar-county-primary-election-results-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defeated an incumbent Democrat for the role in 2018<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/news\/local\/politics\/article\/Inside-the-ground-game-and-Soros-effect-that-took-12770212.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roughly $1 million<\/a>\u00a0in campaign help from a national liberal criminal justice reform PAC. Four years later, he fended off a challenge from Republican Marc LaHood in another expensive race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"State Rep.
