You can also listen to him on &#8216;The John Keim Report&#8217;, which airs on ESPN Richmond radio.<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ASHBURN, Va. &#8212; <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"fbeaf73e-6d6c-cca4-0809-713d9d741f90\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/wsh\/washington-commanders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Commanders<\/a> coach Dan Quinn will take over defensive coordinator duties, hoping to alter the path of a group that has struggled mightily.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Whitt, who has served in that role since the start of the 2024 season, will remain on staff. Whitt served as the pass game coordinator\/secondary coach under Quinn when he was the defensive coordinator in Dallas from 2021 to 2023.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When something&#8217;s not working, we shift from the question of why isn&#8217;t it working to what do we need to do to get it right,&#8221; Quinn said. &#8220;Joe took the news like the pro he is. We&#8217;re all consumed by getting it right. That&#8217;s what we intend to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The news occurred one day after Washington lost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401772878\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">44-22<\/a> to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"56caffee-178d-f6f2-a076-b277486b8c32\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/det\/detroit-lions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Detroit Lions<\/a> and did not force a punt. Washington has allowed its most points over a four-game stretch (154) since the 1954 season.<\/p>\n<p>The Commanders (3-7), who have lost five games in a row, leave Monday night for Spain. They will play the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"af33088b-1e19-d27d-dbc0-354fd7151703\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/mia\/miami-dolphins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miami Dolphins<\/a> in Madrid on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Washington&#8217;s defense ranks 28th in scoring and 30th in yards allowed per game. In the past five weeks, the Commanders have stumbled hard: They rank 31st in both scoring (35.8 points per game) and yards, ahead of only the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"75b8623b-8926-b411-0476-3d3602b78523\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/team\/_\/name\/cin\/cincinnati-bengals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cincinnati Bengals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>The Commanders were 18th in points and 13th in yards last season. They added defensive tackle <a data-player-guid=\"3c1b9124-32f5-acb0-ffd6-c382b764638d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4259491\/javon-kinlaw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Javon Kinlaw<\/a>, safety <a data-player-guid=\"93474c74-bbe8-c24f-8cce-a86a16009d77\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/3915297\/will-harris\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Harris<\/a> and defensive end <a data-player-guid=\"c5ed5de0-97cc-6021-98cd-edfb242b2068\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/2980080\/deatrich-wise-jr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deatrich Wise Jr<\/a>. as starters in free agency and drafted corner <a data-player-guid=\"1e69c37c-4dc0-316f-bbfc-063da90e4053\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4574689\/trey-amos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trey Amos<\/a> in the second round.<\/p>\n<p>Wise (torn quad) was placed on injured reserve after getting hurt in Week 2, Harris (fractured fibula) remains on IR, and Amos is headed there after fracturing a fibula. <a data-player-guid=\"fe828712-b9a1-f628-89e6-2938a6362a4a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/3121421\/marshon-lattimore\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marshon Lattimore<\/a>, who was the other starting outside corner with Amos, suffered a torn ACL in Week 9 and is out for the season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After watching and reviewing the tape, we felt off,&#8221; Quinn said. &#8220;I thought this is the time to lean into that. Joe and I have a great vibe working together. Joe will be involved all week with the rest of the staff in planning and getting ready for the game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whitt moved to the sideline for Sunday&#8217;s game, but he will return to the coaches&#8217; booth to help Quinn, particularly with coverages.<\/p>\n<p>Quinn was Seattle&#8217;s defensive coordinator for two seasons in 2013-14 and parlayed that into a head coaching job in Atlanta.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"John KeimNov 10, 2025, 03:47 PM ET Close John Keim covers the Washington Commanders for ESPN.
