{"id":37013,"date":"2025-07-04T03:23:18","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T03:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/37013\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T03:23:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T03:23:18","slug":"ice-agents-blasted-by-families-officials-for-arresting-migrants-in-nyc-courts-despite-open-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/37013\/","title":{"rendered":"ICE agents blasted by families, officials for arresting migrants in NYC courts despite open cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The good news for 20-year-old asylum seeker Joselyn Chipantiza-Sisalema is that a Manhattan federal judge has left the door open on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/06\/20\/pregnant-ecuadorian-migrant-watches-husband-get-hauled-ice-agents-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bid to stay in the U.S.<\/a> and avoid what her family says is persecution and certain death if she returns to Ecuador.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news is that federal agents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/07\/02\/ice-agents-now-snatching-migrants-with-open-court-cases-nyc-officials-lawyers-say-its-utterly-unlawful\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lying in wait outside the courtroom,<\/a> arrested her anyway despite a pending court date, tossing her in a detention cell with 50 other women where she sleeps on the floor, has no access to a shower and has worn the same clothes for more than a week.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Federal law enforcement officers are pictured in the Jacob K. (Barry Williams\/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand these laws that led to the detainment of my daughter,\u201d said Joselyn\u2019s father, Marco Chipantiza, 40 on Thursday. \u201cI don\u2019t understand why they are subjecting her to these conditions. She\u2019s not eating. She\u2019s sleeping on the floor. (Barry Williams\/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Migrant supporters said that masked agents have been lurking outside federal courtrooms detaining asylum seekers regardless of the status of their cases.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agents have been seen sitting inside, or just outside of courtrooms, and staging themselves in the hallways to ambush and arrest these migrants as they step foot outside the courtroom, the supporters said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Federal law enforcement officers take immigrants into custody in Jacob K. (Barry Williams\/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we see is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-california-immigration-customs-enforcement-newsom-0482a8935419d88986b890b18db5cc03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump again directing agents<\/a> to break the law,\u201d said Alexa Aviles, chair of the City Council\u2019s Committee on Immigration. \u201cThese are people that are following the legal right and their proceedings that they are being asked to do. They are doing the right thing and they are being abducted by masked, armed agents. In many circumstances, it\u2019s unclear what agency they even represent. This is abhorrent. It is frightening. (Barry Williams\/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Joselyn\u2019s family said they fled to the U.S. to escape the lawlessness and vengeful gangs in Ecuador. Joselyn was in a GED program before she was arrested outside a courtroom last month following a routine immigration hearing where she was given a date for a future appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, she has been able to speak to her parents only three times, each call no longer than a minute, her father said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s complicated but we came to this country to save our lives because it\u2019s very dangerous there,\u201d Chipantiza said. \u201cIt\u2019s very different with the gangs that all over the country.<\/p>\n<p>City Council member Julie Won told reporters about two West African migrants who were arrested back to back when they stepped outside of the courtroom despite having open cases.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Federal law enforcement officers take immigrants into custody in Jacob K. (Barry Williams\/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were told that their case had to be pushed back because they did not have a translator,\u201d Won said on the eve of the Fourth of July holiday. \u201cClearly there is no due process. People are trying to follow the law. People are here with their papers to make sure they have a hearing. They\u2019re not even given a hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were supposed to have a hearing and they were adjourned because they did not have the proper translation services which is what is due to them by the court of the United States of America.
