{"id":370342,"date":"2025-11-11T00:22:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T00:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/370342\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T00:22:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T00:22:13","slug":"not-just-nyc-poll-shows-mamdani-economic-policies-popular-across-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/370342\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Not Just NYC&#8217;: Poll Shows Mamdani Economic Policies Popular Across US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/when-is-schumer-up-for-reelection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calls<\/a> for ousting Democratic congressional leadership because the party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/democrats-cave-on-government-shutdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">caved<\/a> in the government shutdown fight over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthcare<\/a>, a YouGov poll <a href=\"https:\/\/ygo-assets-websites-editorial-emea.yougov.net\/documents\/New_York_Politics_poll_results_bIqkj03.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> Monday shows the nationwide popularity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a> City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani&#8217;s economic agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani beat former New York Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/andrew-cuomo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Cuomo<\/a> in both the June Democratic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/zohran-mamdani-wins-primary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">primary<\/a> and last week&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/zohran-mamdani-new-york-mayor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general election<\/a> by campaigning unapologetically as a democratic socialist dedicated to making the nation&#8217;s largest city more affordable for working people.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/us-living-wage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polls<\/a> have suggested that Mamdani&#8217;s progressive platform offers Democrats across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a> a roadmap for candidates in next year&#8217;s midterms and beyond. As NYC&#8217;s next mayor began <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZohranKMamdani\/status\/1987930923736985783\" target=\"_blank\">assembling<\/a> his team and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mamdani-wins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movement<\/a> that worked to elect him created a group to keep fighting for his ambitious agenda, YouGov surveyed 1,133 US adults after his victory. <\/p>\n<p>While just 31% of those surveyed said they would have voted for Mamdani\u2014more than any other candidate\u2014and the same share said they would vote for a candidate who identified as a &#8220;democratic socialist,&#8221; the policies he ran on garnered far more support. <\/p>\n<p>YouGov found:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ee-ul\">\n<li>69% of respondents somewhat or strongly support raising taxes on corporations and millionaires;<\/li>\n<li>66% support implementing free childcare for every child ages 6 weeks to 5 years;<\/li>\n<li>65% support freezing rent for lower-income tenants;<\/li>\n<li>57% support creating a network of government-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low rather than making a profit; <\/li>\n<li>56% support raising the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/minimum-wage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minimum wage<\/a> to $30 by 2030; and<\/li>\n<li>53% support permanently eliminating the fares on public buses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Data for Progress similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filesforprogress.org\/datasets\/2025\/11\/dfp_mamdani_agenda_nationwide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surveyed<\/a> 1,228 likely voters from across the United States about key pieces of Mamdani&#8217;s platform before his win. The think tank found that large majorities of Americans support efforts to build more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/affordable-housing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affordable housing<\/a>, higher taxes for corporations as well as millionaires and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/billionaires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">billionaires<\/a>, and free childcare, among other policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"6c49394e888f5f3a29cec83bdfb43715\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/image.webp?id=62136821&amp;width=980\" height=\"1086\" id=\"48b67\" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201999%201086'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" width=\"1999\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a common refrain from some pundits to dismiss Mamdani&#8217;s victory as a quirk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-york-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City<\/a> politics rather than a sign of something bigger,&#8221; Data for Progress executive director Ryan O&#8217;Donnell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/insights\/2025\/11\/5\/voters-nationwide-support-mamdani-policies-want-the-government-to-play-a-major-role-in-lowering-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> last week. &#8220;But his campaign paired moral conviction with concrete plans to lower costs and expand access to services, making it unmistakable what he stood for and whom he was fighting for. The lesson isn&#8217;t that every candidate should mimic his style\u2014you can&#8217;t fake authenticity\u2014but that voters everywhere respond when a candidate connects economic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/populism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">populism<\/a> to clear, actionable goals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Candidates closer to the center are running on an affordability message as well,&#8221; he noted, pointing to Democrat Mikie Sherrill&#8217;s gubernatorial victory in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-jersey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Jersey<\/a>. &#8220;When a center-left figure like Sherill is running on taking on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/corporate-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corporate power<\/a>, it underscores how central economic populism has become across the political spectrum. Her message may have been less fiery than Mamdani&#8217;s, but she drew from a similar well of voter frustration over rising costs and corporate influence.
