target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/kwtx.com\"><b>WACO, Texas (KWTX) &#8211;<\/b><\/a> A Central Texas mom who turned to running to cope after her teenage son was killed in an accident in 2015 just completed a full marathon with a third-place finish and a personal record. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lorna Hering, 55, of McGregor, completed the Fort Worth Marathon Sunday running 26.2 miles in an impressive time of four hours and 28 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The McGregor High School English teacher said she thinks running helped save her life after her 15-year-old son Rhett died when his UTV flipped near the family\u2019s driveway in December of 2015.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto never knew how much I would need running to help me survive the worst loss of my life,\u201d Lorna told KWTX.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Rhett was a shining star in the community of McGregor, serving as McGregor\u2019s student body president and quarterback of its football team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He was celebrated by peers and adults for his kindness to everyone and his death sparked the creation of a nonprofit called \u201cThe Rhett Revolution,\u201d which exists to uplift the community of McGregor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Rhett Hering\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/PX6H2HP6NRCHTA7SPTCWYQGPDU.jpg\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" \/>Rhett Hering<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lorna\u2019s first half marathon in 2015 was just prior to Rhett\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cHe wrote me a note of encouragement to read during the race that said, \u2018keep on hammering.\u2019 I never intended to run any more races, but I\u2019m sure glad I \u2018kept on hammering\u2019 because it has brought me so many good things,\u201d Lorna said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">When Rhett died, Lorna turned to her faith, her family, her friends and the pavement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">She recalls a time jogging after Rhett\u2019s death in which she sat down on a trail to cry when an elderly couple stopped to check on her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt was so healing,\u201d Lorna recalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">And so has every run been since.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Lorna has now completed five marathons and 11 half marathons since 2022 when she ran her first...\" loading=\"lazy\" since 2022 when she ran her first full marathon in five hours and 36 minutes.(Courtesy Photo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI will always be thankful for my ability and love of running,\u201d Lorna said. \u201cIt helped heal my broken heart and gave me an outlet to process the grief of losing my boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lorna said, instead of sadness, her long runs now bring her peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI cried so many tears and ran so many miles after losing Rhett,\u201d Lorna said. \u201cIn time, the tears turned to prayers and memories and now I feel peace when I run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lorna has now completed five marathons and 11 half marathons since 2022 when she ran her first full marathon in five hours and 36 minutes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Her Fort Worth time was her best yet by 17 minutes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lorna has logged 1,112 miles so far this year competing in both Texas and New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cMy ultimate goal is to quality for Boston, but that is a really lofty goal,\u201d Lorna said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lorna is married to Waco lawyer Jimmy Hering who served as mayor of McGregor for 26 years before stepping down in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The couple has two other children, Ryan, 26 , and Mara, 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Ryan also recently married. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Herings help families who have lost children with a nonprofit they started called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archwayofhope.org\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"
