Sydney Sweeney is defending her new movie, Christy, brushing off its abysmal box office numbers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Christy, which follows the \u201990s <\/b>rise of queer boxer Christy Martin as well as her manager-turned-husband\u2019s abuse, debuted at No. 11 at the box office, only making $1.3 million despite production costing $15 million. Its small earnings awarded the film one of the worst debuts for a movie released in more than 2,000 North American theaters. <\/p>\n

Contrasting the film\u2019s disastrous ticket sales, Rami Malek\u2019s Nuremberg took home $4.1 million in sales<\/a>, despite being shown in just 1,802 theaters\u2014over 200 fewer than Sweeney\u2019s was shown in. Topping the board in sales was Predator: Badlands, which took home $40 million. <\/p>\n

Despite the numbers, the controversial Euphoria star used her Instagram account to tell fans how \u201cdeeply proud\u201d she is of a film that \u201cstands for survival, courage and hope.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThrough our campaigns, we helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence,\u201d Sweeney wrote. \u201cWe all signed on to this film with the belief that christy\u2019s story could save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney expressed how \u201cproud\u201d she is of the film\u2019s director, David Mich\u00f4d, the story they told, and her pride in being able \u201cto represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThis experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life,\u201d she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post detailing shots from behind the scenes. <\/p>\n

She went on to thank everyone who saw the film and \u201cbelieved\u201d in the story. \u201cIf Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,\u201d she wrote. \u201cSo yes I\u2019m proud. why? because we don\u2019t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and Christy has been the most impactful project of my life.\u201d <\/p>\n

Sweeney ended her post by addressing Martin\u2014who has<\/a> many<\/a> posts<\/a> with<\/a> Sweeney<\/a> up<\/a> on<\/a> her<\/a> Instagram<\/a>, including a happy birthday post<\/a>\u2014directly, writing, \u201cthank you christy. i love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney has been embroiled in controversy since starring in an American Eagle ad about \u201cgreat genes,\u201d which some progressive activists described as \u201cNazi propaganda.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n

In the ad, Sweeney\u2014who has blonde hair and blue eyes\u2014tells viewers that \u201cgenes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color,\u201d adding, \u201cMy jeans are blue.\u201d The ad then uses the tagline \u201cSydney Sweeney has great jeans\u201d to attempt a play on the phrase \u201cgreat genes,\u201d a bit of word play that sparked outrage online.<\/p>\n

MAGA then seemingly adopted Sweeney after learning she was a registered Republican<\/a>\u2014a fact The White House praised.<\/a> President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance both supported Sweeney and her ad<\/a>, with Trump writing on Truth Social: \u201cSydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the HOTTEST ad out there. Go get \u2018em, Sydney!\u201d Meanwhile, Vance tried to claim that the online outrage was an overreaction. <\/p>\n

Addressing the controversy and the president and vice president\u2019s support, Sweeney told GQ that the reaction was \u201csurreal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did a jean ad,\u201d Sweeney said. \u201cI mean, the reaction was definitely a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I\u2019m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the July ad, Sweeney\u2019s crime thriller Americana also flopped<\/a> at the box office.<\/p>\n

The film came in 16th at box offices, only early $840,000 across the 1,100 theaters it was shown at across the nation. That averages out to $460 per theater, according to the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. <\/p>\n
