{"id":371894,"date":"2025-11-11T16:25:34","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T16:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/371894\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T16:25:34","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T16:25:34","slug":"labour-minister-tells-ford-friendly-union-it-will-be-tapped-to-build-hwy-401-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/371894\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour Minister tells Ford-friendly union it will be tapped to build Hwy. 401 tunnel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/ford-government\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ford government<\/a> barrels ahead with a fresh feasibility study on whether a traffic-transit tunnel can be built under <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/highway-401\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Highway 401<\/a>, Ontario\u2019s labour minister has already told a PC-friendly union that it would eventually benefit from the construction contract.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As part of the Fall Economic Statement, Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy announced the government <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11515292\/highway-401-tunnel-feasibility-study-awarded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">allocated $9.1 million to WSP Canada Inc. to study the project<\/a>, including the length and potential cost of the congestion-relieving expressway.<\/p>\n<p>While the feasibility study could take more than a year to complete, it appears the Ford government has already promised Ontario\u2019s largest construction trade union that its members will be tunnelling under Highway 401.<\/p>\n<p>The Labourers International Union of North America (LiUNA), which represents thousands of workers in the civil and residential construction sector, has endorsed the Progressive Conservatives in two successive elections and, in the most recent election, opened its training facility for Ford to make a campaign announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The union\u2019s various locals across Ontario have also received a total of $21 million in provincial funding since Ford took office in 2018 for a variety of training, education and rehabilitation funds. We\u2019ve got a tunnel we\u2019re gonna build, and I know who\u2019s going to build it.
