Late-night hosts had a lot to say Monday about the Democrats\u2019 decision to end the government shutdown<\/a> \u2013 most of it scathing. <\/p>\n

Calling it a \u201cworld-class collapse,\u201d Jon Stewart criticized the Democrats, not only for capitulating to President Donald Trump and the Republicans, but managing to do so while getting nothing in return. <\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t [expletive] believe it,\u201d \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d host said several times. \u201cYou had the wind at your back, election victories all over the country<\/a> \u2026 You sold out the entire shutdown not to get what you wanted, but for a promise to not get what you wanted later.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Eight members of the Democratic Caucus, including Maine Senator Angus King and New Hampshire\u2019s Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Senator Maggie Hassan<\/a>, joined Republicans to end the longest government shutdown in US history. The Democrats did not achieve their goal of extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies that will expire at the end of the year and potentially cause millions of Americans to lose health insurance<\/a>. <\/p>\n

What Democrats did get was a promise from Republican Senate majority leader John Thune to allow a vote next month on extending the subsidies. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe shutdown may have been long and painful for millions of Americans, but at least it achieved jack squat,\u201d said Stephen Colbert on Monday\u2019s episode of \u201cThe Late Show.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president\u2019s poll numbers are historically bad. He just got booed at a football game<\/a>, and voters handed Democrats huge victories in Tuesday\u2019s election. So naturally, Senate Democrats looked at all of that and said, \u2018Now is the time to cave.\u2019\u201d said Seth Meyers on \u201cLate Night.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Now that the shutdown is nearing an end, Jimmy Kimmel said he\u2019s skeptical that Thune and the Republicans will actually honor their pledge to take a vote on extending the ACA subsidies. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s one thing we know about Trump and his merry band of sycophants, it\u2019s that their word is as good as gold,\u201d Kimmel said. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The hosts called out all eight of the Democrats who voted with the Republicans, but Colbert specifically skewered Shaheen, who had said her constituents were asking: \u201cWhy can\u2019t you all just work together to address the problems that are facing this country?\u201d<\/p>\n

Colbert seemed mystified.<\/p>\n

\u201cCause the country is being run by insane people,\u201d Colbert said. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
