{"id":372361,"date":"2025-11-11T21:01:26","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T21:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/372361\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T21:01:26","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T21:01:26","slug":"newsom-says-8-senators-who-struck-shutdown-deal-arent-alarmed-enough-about-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/372361\/","title":{"rendered":"Newsom says 8 senators who struck shutdown deal aren&#8217;t alarmed enough about Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELEM, Brazil (AP) \u2014 California Gov. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/gavin-newsom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gavin Newsom<\/a> said Tuesday he\u2019s stunned by <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/government-shutdown-8-democrats-e83180c0b69642a00a234c244d9ea76e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eight senators\u2019 decision<\/a> to break with Democrats and end the government shutdown and warned they\u2019re not alarmed enough about President Donald Trump\u2019s political norm-shattering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not coming in to punch anybody in the face, but I\u2019m not pleased that, in the face of this invasive species that is Donald Trump, who\u2019s completely changed the rules of the game, that we\u2019re still playing by the old rules of the game,\u201d Newsom told The Associated Press in an interview at the COP30 UN Climate Conference in Brazil. \u201cAnd in my core, I\u2019m stunned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-f80000\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"California Gov. (AP Photo\/Andre Penner)<\/p>\n<p>Read More<\/p>\n<p>Newsom was asked what he would say to the group of seven Democrats and one independent senator who joined with Republicans in the Senate late Monday to pass legislation to reopen the government, bringing the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/government-shutdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">longest shutdown in history<\/a> closer to an end. Along with the ratified deal came searing criticism for the moderates from other Democrats, frustrated by what they said amounted to caving to the GOP without achieving lasting progress toward extending health care subsidies set to expire Jan. 1.<\/p>\n<p>As news of potential compromise neared ahead of a procedural Sunday night vote to advance the overall funding legislation, Newsom\u2019s press office wrote on X, \u201cPathetic. This isn\u2019t a deal. It\u2019s a surrender. Don\u2019t bend the knee!\u201d After the same eight senators \u2014 seven Democrats and independent Sen. Angus King of Maine, who caucuses with Democrats \u2014 joined with Republicans in that procedural vote, he called their conciliation \u201ccapitulation and a betrayal of working Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group of defectors consisted of several senators who are retiring next year, as well as a number of former governors. Since making their moves, several have acknowledged they viewed the deal as imperfect but necessary to end the shutdown, which has meant missed paychecks, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/snap-benefits-trump-administration-demands-undo-states-d433f20df4d461db506e0d327a58d3c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stoppages in federal food aid<\/a> and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/government-shutdown-flights-airlines-airports-travel-delays-3141d255af51a447a96aa94e33264efe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel headaches<\/a> for millions across the country.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-b40000\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"California Gov. Bickel)<\/p>\n<p>Read More<\/p>\n<p>Asked by AP about his own efforts to counter Trump, from a bombastic social media presence to last week\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-redistricting-prop-50-gavin-newsom-839193bfc2a817086acca7365315f26f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">successful passage<\/a> of U.S. House maps for California aimed at countering Trump-backed efforts to do the same for Republicans in other states, Newsom reiterated what he framed as his commitment to go further than others in his party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really more alarmed than it appears the eight members of my party are in the United States Senate,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cI\u2019m much more alarmed about the future of our country and the world we\u2019re trying to build than they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-brazil-trump-disasters-cooperation-cop30-ae09566d32a8a97a954b2cef831de503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did not send an official delegation<\/a> to COP30 in Brazil this week.
