{"id":372706,"date":"2025-11-12T00:24:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T00:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/372706\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T00:24:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T00:24:17","slug":"elizabeth-berkley-locked-out-of-acting-after-showgirls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/372706\/","title":{"rendered":"Elizabeth Berkley: &#8216;Locked out&#8217; of acting after &#8216;Showgirls&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Elizabeth Berkley has been on tour with \u201c<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/newsletter\/2024-03-15\/showgirls-oscar-winners-claude-sautet-clase-tous-risques-short-cuts-indie-focus-indie-focus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Showgirls<\/a>\u201d to commemorate its 30th anniversary \u2014 but 30 years ago there was nothing to celebrate. <\/p>\n<p>As the former \u201cSaved by the Bell\u201d star told the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/elizabeth-berkley-interview-showgirls-career-alls-fair-1236417883\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a> in an interview published Monday,  the reception to the 1995 film was so <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1995-09-25-ca-49764-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brutal<\/a> that she was unable to land any acting jobs in the aftermath. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a good two years, I wasn\u2019t allowed to audition for things,\u201d Berkley said. \u201cThe hardest part was being literally locked out of something I loved so much.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This meant the actor had to fight her way back into Hollywood\u2019s good graces \u2014 and she has. One of her most recent roles is a guest spot on the star-studded (but similarly panned) campy legal drama \u201c<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2025-11-08\/alls-fair-kim-kardashian-ryan-murphy-trump-era-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All\u2019s Fair<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Directed by Paul Verhoeven from a script by his \u201c<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1992-03-20-ca-4070-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Basic Instinct<\/a>\u201d collaborator Joe Eszterhas, \u201cShowgirls\u201d was Berkley\u2019s first starring film role as well as her first big project after her time on the teen TV breakout \u201cSaved by the Bell.\u201d But the movie was mired in controversy, from its <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1995-09-16-ca-46570-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NC-17 rating<\/a> to the hostile <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1995-09-22-ca-48657-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reviews<\/a> and cratering at the box office. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a beating, guys,\u201d Berkley <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/elizabeth-berkley-criticism-saved-by-bell-showgirls-11828165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> said during a fan Q&amp;A before a recent screening. \u201cIt was not fun for a little while. I\u2019m not going to lie. It was painful. I was isolated. I felt abandoned by the very people I collaborated with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1995-10-11-ca-55870-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported in 1995<\/a> that Berkley was \u201cunfairly\u201d taking most of the heat for how \u201cShowgirls\u201d was received, noting at the time that she had been dropped by her agent and had yet to line up her next job.<\/p>\n<p>The latest Hollywood Reporter interview recounts how at the time Berkley was left to fend for herself on the film\u2019s press tour and that preparation involved publicists showing her clips of reviews that insulted her looks and acting ability. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of things went on that wouldn\u2019t be allowed now \u2014 someone could not be pummeled to that degree,\u201d Berkley said to the outlet. \u201cI couldn\u2019t understand how people could be so cruel, but I\u2019m tough. I had to separate out what they said from what I believed to be true.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShowgirls,\u201d of course, has since been reevaluated and embraced by audiences and academics, elevating it beyond even its cult status.
